Hakone Shrine is a historic shrine located in Hakone Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, which has been revered for centuries as a center for mountain worship. The 'Peace Torii,' standing in Lake Ashi, is a historic structure erected in 1952 and serves as a symbolic landmark marking significant historical milestones of the area.
The torii gate facing Lake Ashi creates an incredibly striking and iconic landscape. Visitors can also view precious cultural assets, including historical scrolls, divine statues, and sacred weaponry, at the 'Treasure Hall' (Hobutsu-den). Hakone Shrine hosts various festivals throughout the seasons. In February, the 'Setsubun-sai' festival is held, featuring dynamic rituals like the 'Oni-oi' (demon chasing) on the lake. Other notable events include the 'Lake Water Festival' on July 31st and the 'Motomiya Festival' on October 24th. For example, when heading to the Kuzuryu Main Shrine, you can use the 'Kuzuryu Shrine Sightseeing Boat' from Hakone-en or Kojiri Terminal. Walking through the 'Kuzuryu Forest' in Hakone-en allows you to feel the sacred atmosphere while walking through lush nature. For a more educational experience, you can view the historical artifacts at the Treasure Hall.

When visiting, it is important to observe proper shrine etiquette. We recommend comfortable clothing and shoes, as you may be walking through natural areas and weather can change suddenly. Please prepare cash (coins or bills) for offerings or certain facilities, as cash is primarily used.
