The Yakama Potholes are a collection of uniquely shaped holes, known as potholes, found on the riverbed of the Kurokawa River in the Yanagiya Valley of Kumakogen Town, Ehime Prefecture. Over many years, the constant movement of sediment and pebbles along the riverbanks has eroded the rock, creating numerous depressions resembling the bottom of a pot. These formations are named after their distinct shapes, such as the "Tunnel Pothole," "Lion Pothole," and "Spectacle Pothole." The landscape is characterized by the deep green of the riverbed and the powerful, rhythmic sound of flowing water.
This area is steeped in local legend, with ancient tales suggesting that a Dragon God resides here. One fascinating legend tells of a time when people prayed for rain during droughts; if the rain failed to come, they would cast metal objects into the deep pools to appease the Dragon God. This history of respecting and fearing the overwhelming power of nature contributes to the mystical atmosphere of the site.
The primary attraction is the vast array of potholes of various sizes and shapes, each one unique due to the natural erosive forces at work. Observing these diverse geological formations is a truly captivating experience. During periods of high water volume, the roar of the river becomes even more intense, allowing visitors to feel the raw energy of nature directly. The walking paths include steep slopes and areas that can be slippery due to water or fallen leaves. The walk involves a descent of approximately 20 minutes to reach the area and a steep 30-minute climb to return. Therefore, wearing stable, non-slip footwear such as sneakers is strongly recommended.
