The Sasami Preservation District for Important Traditional Buildings is a beautifully preserved historical area located in the southern part of Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It served as a crucial midpoint on the 'Hagi Okan,' the vital highway connecting Hagi Castle town to Hofu City. This location allowed it to develop as a post station where feudal lords and travelers could rest during their journeys. In 2011, it was officially designated by the Japanese government as a Preservation District for Important Traditional Buildings. Due to its history as both an agricultural hub and a strategic transport node, the area maintains a unique architectural style and land layout that has remained largely unchanged since the early Edo period.
This region played a pivotal role in the transportation network of the Edo period. With the establishment of the Hagi Okan, the area's function as a post station was strengthened, leading to the formation of a town centered around the 'Ochanaya' (tea house), where the local lords would take breaks. While based on agriculture, its role as a transport hub brought prosperity and led to the preservation of numerous historical buildings, structures, and environmental assets. Hagi City hosts several such preservation districts, and Sasami stands out as a significant cultural heritage site that vividly narrates the history of the region.
The most striking feature of Sasami is the preservation of its original land divisions (chimei) and street layouts from the Edo period. You can observe various buildings and artifacts that showcase the daily life and functions of a former post station. The area surrounding the Ochanaya, once a resting place for feudal lords, is particularly symbolic of the region's history. Walking through the streets allows you to feel the atmosphere of the old highway, surrounded by traditional residences and historical landscapes.
As Sasami is an open area, you are free to wander through the historical streets at any time. During daylight hours, the architectural details and the structure of the streets are clearly visible, making it an excellent time for photography. Visiting during quieter hours allows for a more serene and contemplative stroll, helping you truly absorb the tranquil atmosphere of a former post town.
The primary way to enjoy Sasami is through a 'historical stroll,' where the entire district acts like an open-air museum. Rather than visiting specific indoor facilities, you can walk through the streets to observe the architectural styles and the layout of the town as it existed centuries ago. Notable sites like the Former Kobayashi Family Residence (Hagi Okan Omotenashi Chaya) offer deeper insights into the local culture and history.
There are several other historical spots nearby. The Former Kobayashi Family Residence is a great place to feel the local heritage. Additionally, you can visit the scenic Fuchi-daira Falls or stop by 'Michi-no-Eki Asahi' (Roadside Station Asahi) to discover local specialties and regional information.
