Hado Misaki is a scenic cape located at the tip of the Higashimatsuura Peninsula in Chonoshi, Saga Prefecture. As part of the Genkai Quasi-National Park, it is recognized as one of the '100 Best Beaches in Japan' and a 'Lovers' Sanctuary Satellite' location. The greatest draw of this area is the underwater observation tower, which allows you to observe the sea life directly beneath you, and the breathtaking views of the coastline. The area is also developed as a resort destination, featuring facilities such as beaches, campsites, and national lodging facilities for a complete nature experience.
The area holds significant historical weight. To the south lies the site of Nagoya Castle, believed to have been built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1592. The surrounding landscape is dotted with various historical fortifications that tell the story of past battles. At the very tip of the cape stands an unmanned lighthouse that has long protected maritime navigation. Additionally, you can see traces of international exchange, such as the 'Dol Hareubang' stone statues, which are traditional guardian figures from Jeju Island, South Korea.
The iconic symbol of Hado Misaki is the Underwater Observation Tower. Connected to the land by an 86-meter pier, this tower features an observation room 7 meters below the surface. Through 24 windows, you can observe a diverse marine ecosystem, including tropical fish like Blue Chromis and Sea Bream, as well as various seaweeds and shellfish. The observation deck also offers a panoramic view of the islands floating in the Genkai Sea. The scenery becomes particularly dramatic during sunset, when the sky and sea are bathed in golden hues.
Hado Misaki offers different charms depending on the season and time of day. In the summer, the area is lively with people enjoying swimming, camping, and fishing. The twilight hours are the most highly recommended time to witness the spectacular sunset over the ocean.
