Hachimen Daio Ashiyu is a free foot bath facility located in the Hotaka area of Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture. The theme is centered around the local legend of 'Hachimen Daio,' and the facility features a unique, striking sculpture representing this legendary figure at its center. Renovated in 2018, this spot serves as a place where both locals and tourists can easily enjoy the healing waters of the Hotaka Onsen area. It also functions as a waiting area for the local sightseeing bus, making it an ideal resting point during your travels.
The facility is deeply rooted in the 'Hachimen Daio Legend' of Azumino. Hachimen Daio is a legendary figure, and his presence is felt through the various monuments and designs found throughout the site. The renovation of the facility was designed to blend traditional motifs with modern convenience, creating a landscape that visually expresses the unique cultural stories of Azumino.
There are many visual elements to enjoy within the facility. The most striking feature is the Hachimen Daio monument placed in the center, which showcases a powerful and dynamic sculptural form. Additionally, the design attention extends to the details, such as the 'Yu-no-taki' (waterfall) used for temperature adjustment and the drainage-holes designed with the motif of the Shakunae flower. The surrounding area is equipped with wooden benches and subtle lighting, designed to blend seamlessly into the landscape.
The scenery changes beautifully depending on the season. The months of May, October, and November are particularly pleasant due to the changes in surrounding vegetation and temperature. At night, the facility offers a different atmosphere with calm lighting, though visitors should be aware that the drainage process occurs during certain night-time hours.
Visitors can enjoy the natural hot spring water of the Hotaka Onsen area. With wooden benches provided, you can sit back, soak your feet, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. It is a perfect way to refresh yourself quickly while waiting for the sightseeing bus. A typical stay is approximately 20 minutes.
The area around the foot bath is dotted with spots where you can experience the nature and culture of Azumino. For example, the 'Azumino Shakunae no Yu' is just a short walk away, and there are nearby blueberry farms and glass-making workshops, making it easy to incorporate this stop into a broader sightseeing route.
