The Hachimantai Nature Trail is a premier trekking course that allows you to feel the breath of nature up close near the summit of Mount Hachimantai and around Hachimanuma Pond. With well-maintained paths, visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll through forests of Japanese Abies and vibrant alpine flora, alongside beautiful crater lakes formed by volcanic activity. The ever-changing scenery created by this grand volcanic topography is truly captivating.
History and Cultural Background
The topography and names of this area are deeply connected to ancient legends. For instance, near Hachimanuma Pond, a legend tells of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, who gathered his troops at Gentamori to pray to the Hachiman God for victory during his battles with the forces based on Mount Iwate. The name "Hachimantai" itself is said to originate from traditions surrounding this very pond. Additionally, the history of the area is marked by the development of mountain paths, such as those cleared by the former official Abe Tosuke, showing a long history of humans walking alongside nature.
Main Highlights
There are numerous spots that will enchant every visitor:
*Crater Lakes**: As you progress along the trail, various lakes appear one after another. The most iconic is Hachimanuma, a large lake formed in a crater approximately 6,000 years ago, blending beautifully into the landscape. Near Kagaminuma, you may witness the unique "Dragon Eye" phenomenon from late May to early June, where melting snow creates a striking visual effect.
*Alpine Wetlands**: The wetlands surrounding Hachimanuma feature well-maintained wooden boardwalks, allowing you to observe a wide variety of plants. The colors of the landscape change with the seasons from spring to autumn.
*Gentamori Observatory**: From Gentamori, one of the three great viewpoints of Hachimantai, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding nature. You can also enjoy the unique turquoise waters of Gamanuma, which shows clear traces of volcanic activity.
Seasonal Recommendations
While beautiful year-round, we highly recommend the following periods:
*Spring to Summer (May–August)**: The season of blooming alpine plants. Enjoy the vibrant colors of life while walking along the wetland boardwalks.
*Autumn (September–October)**: A perfect time to see the changing colors of the grasses and foliage.
*Winter (December–March)**: Hachimantai is famous for its "Ice Monsters" (massive frost-covered trees). While the scenery is spectacular, it requires professional gear and extreme caution due to the harsh environment.
Activities
The main activities are hiking and nature observation using the established trails. The course is relatively easy and suitable even for beginners, making it a great way to experience the beauty of volcanic formations. However, please plan carefully as conditions change significantly based on weather and season.
Surrounding Area
Near the Mikkaeritoshi Parking Lot, which serves as the starting point, there are facilities to support your nature walk. There are also nearby hot spring (onsen) areas where you can soothe your muscles after a day of trekking.
