The Hachimantai Aspite Line is a scenic mountain road approximately 35 to 40 km long, connecting Kazuno City in Akita Prefecture and Hachimantai City in Iwate Prefecture. The name "Aspite" is derived from the fact that Hachimantai was once believed to be a shield volcano (Aspite). This route is renowned as one of the most spectacular driving routes in the Tohoku region. As you ascend, you will witness a shifting landscape of vegetation, crater-formed ponds, and dramatic geological formations. Because the scenery changes completely with each season, you can enjoy the diverse beauty of nature throughout the year.
While certain sections of this road were once toll roads, the entire route was opened to free traffic in 1992. Historically, the section on the Akita side was designated as a prefectural road in 1959, and it has long been maintained as an important regional transport and tourism route. Today, it serves as a major road spanning both Iwate and Akita prefectures, managed carefully to preserve the scenic beauty of the surrounding natural park.
The greatest charm of the Aspite Line is the diverse scenery encountered while driving. As your altitude increases, the landscape transforms, with gentle curves following the mountain slopes in the highland areas. A unique feature of this area is the presence of various ponds formed in the volcanic craters. Near Mikawaritoge Pass, which sits at an altitude of approximately 1,613m, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Depending on the season, you may encounter rare sights such as the "Dragon Eye" (a clear blue water surface) appearing after the snow melts, or the magnificent "Snow Corridor" in the spring.
Recommended visiting times vary by season. From mid-May to mid-June, you can witness the precious "Dragon Eye" phenomenon. From early to mid-October, the area becomes a famous spot for vibrant autumn foliage. In early spring (from late April), driving through the "Snow Corridor" is a wonderful option. Please note that during the winter season (early November to late April), many sections are closed due to heavy snow. Additionally, during the period immediately after reopening, there may be nighttime closures (17:00 - 8:30), so please check the schedule in advance.
Beyond driving, this area offers wonderful opportunities for nature walks. From the Mikawaritoge parking area, there is a walking course of about 30 minutes leading toward the summit of Mt. Hachimantai, allowing you to experience the natural scenery of lakes like Hachiman-numa and Kama-numa up close. Furthermore, the surrounding area is dotted with hot spring villages, allowing you to combine a scenic drive with a relaxing soak in an onsen.
The area is surrounded by the rich natural beauty of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. The local hot spring culture is also prominent, with famous hot springs such as Suminoiyu and Goshogake located nearby. At higher altitudes, you can also observe pastoral landscapes and unique geological formations shaped by volcanic activity.
Since you will be driving through high-altitude areas, temperatures fluctuate significantly depending on the elevation. It is essential to bring warm clothing even in summer. As this is a protected natural area, please be mindful of the environment by taking your trash with you.
