Gyoden Park is a vast, beautiful natural space covering approximately 6.53 hectares in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture. The park holds a unique historical identity; it was once part of the estate of Gion-sha in Kyoto, known as "Gion-den," which eventually evolved into its current name, "Gyoden." Today, it serves as a beloved sanctuary where visitors can immerse themselves in the changing colors of the seasons, from vibrant spring blossoms to the refreshing presence of pure spring water.
The name of this area traces back to its history as a manor belonging to the Gion-sha (the current Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto). Originally called "Gion-den," the name underwent a linguistic shift over the centuries to become "Gyoden." This historical depth adds a layer of cultural significance to the landscape. Furthermore, the area is blessed with the "Gyoden no Sawa Shimizu," which has been officially selected as one of the "100 Best Waters of the Heisei Era," highlighting the long-standing history of abundant and pure water resources in this region.

The park offers several distinct seasonal attractions. The most spectacular is the Japanese Iris (Hanashobu) display, occurring from mid-to-late June. With approximately 40,000 plants across 88 varieties, the iris garden creates a stunning tapestry of color. In the spring, the park is transformed by cherry blossoms, attracting many visitors for hanami (flower viewing). Another essential feature is the natural spring water found throughout the park; the sight and sound of fresh water flowing through the lush forest provide a deeply calming experience, showcasing the raw beauty of Japan's natural environment.
To experience the park's full glory, timing is essential. Spring is the season for cherry blossoms, offering a soft, romantic landscape. However, the most iconic time to visit is early summer (mid-to-late June), when the 40,000 Japanese irises are in full bloom, making it a premier destination for flower enthusiasts. While the lush greenery and refreshing spring water can be enjoyed year-round, we highly recommend planning your visit around these specific blooming periods to see the park at its most vibrant.
Gyoden Park is an ideal destination for slow-paced exploration. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through the various iris gardens, along paths lined with cherry trees, or near the refreshing spring water. The environment is perfect for a quiet walk to listen to the sounds of nature and the flowing water. Whether you are traveling with family or friends, the park offers a peaceful space to reconnect with the natural world and enjoy the tranquility of the forest.
The park is nestled within the beautiful natural landscape of Namerikawa City. For those arriving by train, it is a pleasant 15-minute walk from Namerikawa Station. Local community buses are also available in the area. If you are driving, the park is easily accessible via the Hokuriku Expressway from the Namerikawa Interchange (IC), making it a convenient stop during a scenic drive through Toyama Prefecture.
As the park features natural terrain and walking paths, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While the park is a free public space, please be mindful of local etiquette: always carry your trash back with you to protect the environment and avoid disturbing the plants. Regarding payments for nearby facilities or parking, please check if they accept cash, credit cards, or transportation IC cards. Please note that English signage and staff assistance may be limited, so it is helpful to have a map or offline translation tool ready. For accessibility, dedicated parking spaces for wheelchairs are available.
