Gudari Numa is a captivating spring-fed pond and stream located in the Tashirodaira area of Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture. The water is characterized by its exceptional clarity, originating from the underground flow of snowmelt from the Hakkoda Mountains. The water flows from the pond into a clear stream approximately 20cm wide, so transparent that the stones at the bottom are perfectly visible. Surrounded by lush deciduous forests, the area offers a changing tapestry of natural beauty throughout the seasons.
The area has a history of livestock grazing, with horses and cattle once roaming these lands. The origin of the name "Gudari" remains a mystery, with several theories: some suggest it comes from "Kudari-sawa," others from "Kudasu (wasteland)," or even an Ainu linguistic root meaning "southern end." This mystery adds a layer of historical depth to the landscape, where names related to the unique topography and water sources have been passed down through generations.
The primary attraction is the pristine spring-fed pond and the resulting clear stream from the Hakkoda snowmelt. The high water volume and extreme transparency allow visitors to clearly observe the riverbed and aquatic plants. In autumn, the landscape transforms as the surrounding deciduous trees turn vibrant shades of red and yellow, creating a stunning reflection on the water's surface. In the early morning, a mystical mist often settles over the water, creating a tranquil and ethereal atmosphere alongside the dew-covered plants.
The scenery changes significantly with the seasons. The autumn season (roughly May to November) is particularly beautiful when the surrounding trees display vivid colors. The early morning hours are highly recommended for those seeking a quiet, meditative experience with the morning mist and dew. During the bright daylight hours, the area is ideal for observing the clear stones at the bottom of the stream and the blue sky reflected on the water'1s surface.
Visitors primarily engage in nature walks and photography. As the terrain near the water can be uneven, movement requires care and attention to the natural landscape. It is a place to immerse yourself in the sounds of nature and the gentle flow of water. Please note that there are no formal recreational facilities; the experience is centered entirely on observing the raw, natural beauty of the environment.
Gudari Numa is located just below the Tashirodaira Grazing Hut (Tashirodaira Bokujo Koya). It serves as a beautiful part of the walking routes through the local topography. The area is also near other significant natural sites, such as the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage site, making it a great stop for nature enthusiasts exploring the wider region.
When walking near the water, please be mindful of the terrain. Since you may encounter mud or water, bringing waterproof boots is highly recommended. As temperatures can fluctuate, especially in the morning or during seasonal changes, bringing warm clothing is essential. While there are no fees for this natural area, please respect the environment by following the rule of "take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints." Always carry your trash back with you and do not pick any plants or flowers.
