Gotenyama Garden is a magnificent Japanese garden spanning approximately 2,000 tsubo (approx. 6,600 m²) in Shinagawa, Tokyo. Located adjacent to the Tokyo Marriott Hotel, it is a beloved urban oasis where visitors can experience lush nature right in the heart of the city. The garden features a variety of landscapes, including serene ponds, cascading waterfalls, and walking paths designed along natural slopes, all showcasing the changing beauty of the seasons. It is an ideal spot to observe the artistry of nature amidst the modern cityscape.
The area holds a significant historical legacy, once serving as a prestigious residence for the Shogun's family during the Edo period. Since the Meiji era, the surrounding district has developed into an upscale residential and commercial area. A notable highlight within the garden is the tea house designed by the renowned architect Arata Isozaki, representing a beautiful fusion of traditional Japanese garden aesthetics and contemporary architectural mastery.

The garden's design brilliantly utilizes the natural topography. A large artificial waterfall stands at one end, allowing visitors to feel the refreshing movement of water and the passage of time. The garden is also home to approximately 70 cherry trees, making it a prime location for the 'Gotenyama Sakura Festival' in spring. During this time, the evening light-up events create a magical atmosphere. In autumn, the vibrant colors of maple and ginkgo trees reflect beautifully on the surface of the pond, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
Gotenyama Garden offers a different face to every visitor. In spring (March to April), the focus is on the cherry blossoms, particularly the Somei Yoshino variety, which are beautifully illuminated at night. In autumn (November to December), the garden turns into a sea of brilliant colors as the foliage reaches its peak. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to observe the diverse plant life along the paths, or during the evening to experience the enchanting light-up displays.

The garden features a compact walking course of about 400 meters, which can be completed in roughly 15 minutes. This allows for a quick yet deeply relaxing stroll away from the daily hustle and bustle. The well-maintained paths make it easy to enjoy a peaceful walk. Visitors can also combine their visit with a break at the adjacent hotel or nearby facilities to enjoy the view while resting. Special seasonal events often provide even more unique ways to experience the garden's beauty.
Adjacent to the Tokyo Marriott Hotel, the garden is a frequent retreat for hotel guests and local professionals. It is easily accessible from Shinagawa Station and Kita-Shinagawa Station, making it a convenient stop during a Tokyo sightseeing itinerary. The surrounding area is rich with commercial facilities and other small parks that reflect the historical and natural charm of the Shinagawa district.
While the walking paths are well-maintained, the garden utilizes natural slopes, so we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. To preserve the natural environment, please be mindful of the plants and scenery. When visiting, it is always a good idea to check the current opening hours for any seasonal changes.
