Goshoko Wide-Area Park is a comprehensive recreational facility developed around Lake Goshoko in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. The park's layout takes full advantage of the natural topography created by the Goshō Dam, one of the five major dams of the Kitakami River, ensuring a design that respects the natural environment. The park is divided into several distinct areas: 'Family Land' featuring play equipment for children, a 'Ride Area' where visitors can enjoy battery cars and cycle trains, 'Nogiku Park' for viewing beautiful lakeside scenery, and the 'Iirino Wetland Botanical Garden' for nature observation. This environment allows people of all ages, from children to adults, to connect deeply with nature while enjoying the scenic lakeside views.
The facility was developed to integrate the natural, historical, and social resources of the Lake Goshoko area to meet the regional demand for high-quality recreation. The development has prioritized environmental conservation, ensuring the space remains a sustainable area for both local residents and tourists. Furthermore, the park serves as a cultural hub for the community; for instance, every year on the last Sunday of July, the 'Goshoko Festival' is held, featuring spectacular fireworks displays over the lake, making it a significant local event.
The park offers multiple areas tailored to different interests and age groups. For families, the Family Land and Ride Area are packed with recreational equipment. Nogiku Park and the surrounding greenery provide perfect spots to gaze at the tranquil lake scenery while walking along well-maintained paths. Nature lovers can visit the Iirino Wetland Botanical Garden to observe species such as skunk cabbage, water lilies, and even fireflies. In the winter, the area near the Goshodai Bridge becomes a beautiful sight as migratory birds like swans and ducks gather in the shallow waters. The main operating period for the park is from April 1st to November 30th. During the summer, seasonal events like the morning markets organized by the Tsunagi Onsen Tourism Association may take place. The Ride Area operates on a seasonal basis from mid-April to early November. Depending on when you visit, you can experience different charms: the blooming plants of spring, the refreshing water activities of summer, or the breathtaking scenery of autumn. Visiting between summer and autumn is particularly recommended as it can be easily combined with a visit to nearby hot spring resorts.
A wide variety of activities are available. For children, there are rides like battery cars and cycle trains, as well as hands-on woodcraft experiences such as making bird calls or bird feeders. For those seeking physical activity, the Goshodai Bridge Sports Field provides baseball fields and tennis courts. Additionally, the Wanpaku Hiroba (Joso Sports Center) features a multi-purpose asphalt ground suitable for activities like roller skating. The lake is also a premier spot for water-based adventures like canoeing and windsurfing.
The area surrounding the park is dotted with various sightseeing and relaxation facilities. The famous 'Tsunagi Onsen' is located nearby, allowing visitors to enjoy both hot springs and nature. Other popular destinations like Koiwai Farm, Morioka Tezukuri Mura (Morioka Traditional Crafts Village), and central Morioka City are all within easy driving or bus distance from Morioka Station. The surrounding environment is perfectly set up for enjoying both accommodation and local cuisine.
To fully enjoy walking and recreational activities, we recommend wearing comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothing and sturdy walking shoes, especially when visiting the botanical garden or the large grassy areas. Regarding etiquette, please note that feeding the migratory birds is strictly prohibited to protect the local ecosystem and maintain hygiene. The park is equipped with parking lots and restrooms, including accessible facilities for people with disabilities. Please be aware that some areas may have slight uneven surfaces.
