Goshikizuka Kofun is a prominent keyhole-shaped burial mound (zenpokoenfun) located on Mt. Goshiki in Tarumi-ku, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. It is renowned as the largest kofun in the prefecture and is officially designated as a National Historic Site. A pioneering project in Japan, the site underwent a massive 10-year restoration process starting in 1965 to recreate its original appearance. Today, it functions as an open-air museum where visitors can truly experience the atmosphere of the Kofun period.
The mound is estimated to have been constructed between the late 4th and early 5th centuries (the mid-Kofun period). Its keyhole shape is a classic architectural form of ancient Japanese royalty. The site is of immense archaeological importance, as it was the first in Japan to undergo systematic restoration. Many of the artifacts unearthed here, including pottery and Haniwa figures, have been designated as National Important Cultural Properties or Kobe City Tangible Cultural Properties, providing a direct link to Japan's ancient past.
Visitors can explore various artifacts that reveal the daily lives and rituals of ancient people. The collection of Haniwa (terracotta funerary figures), pottery, stone implements, and jewelry offers a vivid visual narrative of the era. Notably, 80 items among the exhibits are designated as National Important Cultural Properties, allowing for close-up observation of high-quality craftsmanship. Additionally, the site features a specialized theater that explains the construction process of the mound, using charming characters like 'Goshiki-maro' and 'Tarumiko' to make the complex engineering of the time easy to understand for all ages.
The landscape surrounding the mound changes beautifully with the seasons. For the best experience of the outdoor scenery and the scale of the mound, visiting during bright daylight hours is highly recommended. Inside the exhibition facilities, the atmosphere is calm and controlled with dimmed lighting, creating a contemplative space. Here, visitors can focus on large-scale panels and digital screens that explain ancient lifestyles and archaeological findings in a serene environment.

The 'Kofun Construction Theater' is a standout feature, providing an educational experience that helps visitors understand the advanced civil engineering and cultural structures of ancient Japan.
Goshikizuka Kofun is situated within the historic area near Oji Park in Kobe. The surrounding neighborhood is dotted with various facilities that share the local history and culture, making it an excellent base for a deeper historical exploration. The site also enjoys good connectivity to other major tourist attractions within Kobe City.
Since the site includes outdoor areas around the mound, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Inside the exhibition facilities, please observe strict museum etiquette to protect the precious archaeological materials; do not touch the exhibits.
