Goshikinuma refers to a group of over 30 small lakes and ponds located on the north side of Mount Bandai in Kitashiobara Village, Fukushima Prefecture. Designated as part of the Bandai-Azuma National Park, it possesses a unique landscape shaped by volcanic activity. The most striking feature is the distinct color of each lake. Due to the influence of volcanic water quality and aquatic plants or algae, one can observe a diverse palette of colors including green, red, and blue. This richness of color is the origin of the name 'Goshikinuma' (Five-Colored Lakes).
The formation of Goshikinuma is deeply connected to the eruption of Mount Bandai on July 15, 1888. This eruption caused a massive landslide on the north side of the mountain in the Ko-Bandai area. The resulting debris blocked the river, leading to the formation of hundreds of lakes. While the area was once a desolate landscape, the foundation for the current tourist destination was laid through the reforestation efforts of Genmu Endo, who invested his private fortune into the land. Today, it has developed into a premier destination for nature-based tourism.
Goshikinuma consists of several lakes where you can observe natural color variations. Representative spots include 'Rurinuma,' known for its stunning cobalt blue hues; 'Bishamonnuma,' which offers a magnificent view of Mount Bandai; and 'Bentennuma,' where aquatic plants create beautiful patterns on the water. Along the nature trails (trekking course), you can enjoy the changing colors of the lakes and the surrounding natural environment with every step you take.
Goshikinuma offers natural beauty throughout the year, though the scenery changes with the seasons. The well-maintained nature trails are primarily intended for daytime use. Visitors can observe how the colors of the lakes change depending on the light and the season, especially as the surrounding vegetation shifts. Since it is a nature-oriented walking path, visiting during bright daylight hours is generally recommended for the best visibility.
The primary activity is trekking along the established nature trails. Starting from the Goshikinuma entrance, you can walk a course that passes through Bishamonnuma, Akanuma, Mudoro-numa, Ryunuma, Bentennuma, Rurinuma, Aonuma, and Yanagiuma (total distance approximately 4km). The walk takes about 1.5 hours and allows for a peaceful stroll while observing the colors of the lakes. While the paths are well-maintained, be prepared for slight changes in terrain as you walk through nature.
The area around Goshikinuma is developed as the 'Urabandai Highland' and hosts many tourist facilities. Nearby attractions include the Bandai Mountain Eruption Memorial Museum, the Morohashi Museum of Modern Art, and hot spring facilities like La Spa Urabandai. Additionally, leisure facilities such as Bandai Ski Resort and Urabandai Nekoma Ski Resort are located in the vicinity. Other lakes, such as Lake Hibara, are also scattered throughout this nature-rich region.
When walking the nature trails, comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing are essential. Although the paths are maintained, please prepare for sudden changes in weather. Parking is available near the Goshikinuma entrance and the Urabandai Kogen Station bus stop. To protect the environment, please carry your trash home and show respect for the local plants and natural surroundings.
