Gosen City is renowned as one of the leading tulip production centers in Niigata Prefecture. Beyond just commercial cultivation, the region celebrates its beautiful blooms by hosting the annual "Tulip Festival" every mid-April. The sight of countless colorful tulips stretching across a vast landscape creates a mesmerizing scene, as if a vibrant tapestry of colors has been spread across the earth.
There is a unique culture and tradition tied to tulip cultivation in this region. The process is deeply connected to nurturing the bulbs for future growth. A crucial step in this cycle is "flower picking" (hana-tsumi), where flowers are intentionally removed just before they fade to ensure the bulbs store enough nutrients for the next season. This practice is a cherished spring tradition of the area. Furthermore, due to the soil's inability to support continuous same-crop cultivation (to prevent disease), the festival location shifts every 5 years. Currently, the venue rotates through several areas, such as the Sumoto and Ipponsugi districts, to maintain soil health.
The greatest attraction is the massive expanse of blooming tulips. The colors—red, yellow, pink, and white—create a shifting landscape that changes with the season. During the Tulip Festival, the area is filled with a lively atmosphere as many tourists arrive to witness the spectacle. Visitors can also experience the local agricultural culture, including the traditional techniques used to cultivate these bulbs and the unique system of rotating the festival grounds.
The best time to visit is from mid-April to late April, specifically during the Tulip Festival. We highly recommend visiting during the morning when the light is soft, or during the bright midday hours when the colors of the flowers appear most vivid. Please note that blooming status can vary each year depending on weather conditions, so it is advisable to check the latest blooming information before your trip.

Additionally, you can learn about the local agricultural processes, such as the traditional bulb-nurturing techniques, through the scenery and local context.
Gosen City is located southeast of Niigata City and is surrounded by lush, green nature. The area features beautiful rivers and fertile lands. After enjoying the flower fields, you can relax at nearby hot spring (onsen) facilities or enjoy local agricultural products and seasonal specialties found in the surrounding region.
As you will be walking through large, open-air areas, comfortable clothing and walking shoes are highly recommended, as some paths may be unpaved. Please respect the local agricultural environment: the fields are vital for bulb cultivation, so please follow the designated paths and avoid touching or damaging the flowers.
