Gomado-yama Ajisai Garden is a breathtaking natural spot located in Takakami Town, Niigata Prefecture. Situated near the summit of Mount Gomado at an altitude of 274 meters, the garden is home to approximately 30,000 hydrangeas, including various species such as lacecap hydrangeas (Gaku-ajisai). Spanning an area of about 39,520 square meters, the garden transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colors during the early summer season, offering a truly spectacular landscape.
The site is part of Mount Gomado, a location that has long existed in harmony with nature. The best time to visit is from mid-June to July. During this period, the 'Gomado-yama Yuda Onsen Ajisai Festival' takes place, drawing many visitors to enjoy the festivities. Daytime visits are ideal for seeing the vivid, bright colors of the flowers under natural light. Since the area remains open until 22:00, you can also experience the different atmosphere of the mountain during the evening hours.
Reaching the summit involves a pleasant hike of approximately 40 minutes from the trailhead. This walking path allows visitors to immerse themselves in nature while observing various plants along the way. The summit area serves as an excellent observation point where you can enjoy the harmony of seasonal flowers and the grand landscape of the Echigo Plain below.
Nearby, you can explore other natural spots such as Shirasagi Forest Park and Yauchi Pond. The area is also close to the Yuda Onsen hot spring district, making it easy to plan a relaxing itinerary that combines mountain hiking with a soak in a traditional Japanese hot spring.
