Gokasho Heike no Sato is a cultural site located in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, themed around the legend of the Heike refugees. This area holds deep historical significance, as it is said to be a place where members of the defeated Heike clan fled to hide after their downfall. The site features a museum displaying artifacts related to the Heike clan, serving as a gateway to understanding the region's profound history. Surrounded by mountains with elevations between 1,300 and 1,700 meters, the area offers a seamless blend of dramatic natural landscapes and ancient storytelling.
The legend of the Heike refugees is deeply rooted in this region. Historically, after losing their power, the Heike clan is said to have fled to the remote, mountainous regions of Kyushu, with Gokasho being one of the central locations for their settlement. The local museum displays artifacts that support this history, including traditional performing arts and items passed down through generations. Because the area was used as a natural stronghold or 'hidden village,' a unique and secluded culture has been preserved through the centuries.
There are several notable spots around Gokasho that connect history with nature. At the museum, visitors can examine authentic artifacts and historical documents that reveal the roots of the local community. For adventure seekers, the area features two impressive suspension bridges: the 'Ayatori Bridge' (72m long, 35m high) and the 'Shakunage Bridge' (59m long, 17m high). Additionally, the 'Umenoki-toro Falls,' with its 38-meter drop, is a stunning natural landmark. These structures and landscapes serve as visual testaments to the region's historical narrative.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. The period from October to December is particularly spectacular, as the surrounding mountains and valleys are transformed by vibrant autumn foliage. The area is also famous for its local cuisine, including Ayu (sweetfish) dishes, wild game (gibier), and various mountain delicacies.

Notable spots include 'Tomoki Sanso,' located at a high altitude, and 'Minshuku Yamame-so,' which specializes in Ayu dishes. 'Sakura-so' offers traditional mountain village cuisine, while local cafes like 'Minamoto' and 'Teuchi Soba Yanagiya' serve delicious meals using local ingredients. These establishments are integral parts of the local economy and the regional tourism experience.
