The Goishi Coast is a part of the Sanriku Reconstruction National Park, located on the Sazaki Peninsula in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture. The most striking feature of this coast is the unique landscape of flat, black stones (black mudstone) that give the coast its name, 'Goishi' (meaning Go stone). The area is characterized by steep cliffs of a rias coastline and the dynamic presence of crashing waves, and it is designated as a national scenic spot and natural monument. A lush pine forest also lines the coast, creating a serene natural environment.
This region possesses a fascinating geological history. The unique landscape was formed approximately 130 million years ago by the movement of seafloor plates and crustal changes, resulting in the accumulation of black mudstone. The sound of waves hitting the rocks at Kaminari-iwa (Thunder Rock) is so distinctive that it has been designated as one of the '100 Soundscapes of Japan,' highlighting its cultural and natural value. Additionally, the area holds local sentimental value, featuring a monument for the famous singer Kenji Niinuma, whose hit song 'Omoide Misaki' is deeply connected to this region.
The Goishi Coast offers a diverse range of natural geological formations. A must-see is the 'Anatooshi-iso' sea cave, which can only be accessed by boat. The experience of gliding through the narrow rock opening under the skillful guidance of a boatman is truly unique to this location. Other notable sights include 'Chiyojima,' where seawater sprays into the air via air pressure, 'Kaminari-iwa,' where the waves echo like thunder, and 'Kinchaku-iwa,' a rock with a gentle, pouch-like shape. There are also well-maintained walking paths along the coast, allowing visitors to enjoy the views from land.
The best time to experience the full charm of the Goishi Coast is during the Anatooshi-sen boat operation season, which runs from June to November. The summer months are particularly refreshing, offering a lively boat journey accompanied by a sea breeze. In spring, the surrounding area is also beautiful with blooming cherry blossoms. For the best views of the rock formations, bright daytime hours are ideal. However, if you wish to experience the meditative side of nature, a stroll during quieter times to listen to the rhythmic sounds of the waves is highly recommended.
The highlight of the area is the 'Anatooshi-sen' small sightseeing boat cruise. Starting from Goishi-hama, the route takes you past Kaminari-iwa and Kinchaku-iwa, culminating in the adventurous passage through the Anatooshi-iso sea cave. The cruise takes about 40 minutes and offers an up-close look at the geological wonders. Beyond the boat tour, visitors can enjoy trekking along the coastal paths, nature observation, or even staying overnight at nearby campsites to fully immerse themselves in the natural environment.
The area is well-equipped to support tourists. The Goishi Coast Information Center serves as a hub for sightseeing information and boat tour reservations. Nearby, you can find cultural facilities such as the Ofunato City Museum and the 'World Camellia Hall - Goishi.' The area is also adjacent to campsites, allowing for a blend of nature and culture. While driving is the most convenient way to visit, travelers using public transport should check the schedules for local community buses or demand-based transportation services in advance.
