Godzilla Rock is a natural formation located within the Shiosezaki Geosite of the Oga-Oga Geopark on the southern side of the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture. As the name suggests, the silhouette of the rock closely resembles the legendary monster from the 'Godzilla' films. The rock is composed of volcanic breccia (volcanic agglomerate) from volcanic activity approximately 30 million years ago, and its unique shape has been sculpted over countless years by the relentless forces of waves and wind. Along the coastline of the Oga Peninsula, this site offers a truly dynamic and awe-inspiring view of nature's power.
This area is a key part of the Shiosezaki Geosite within the Oga-Oga Geopark. Besides Godzilla Rock, the area features several other unique rock formations with evocative names, such as 'Godzilla's Tail Rock,' 'Gamera Rock,' 'Twin Rocks,' and 'Hokakashima.' These formations are recognized as part of the '100 Most Beautiful Unusual Rock Formations in Japan,' representing a fusion of geological history and natural artistry. The volcanic breccia foundation of the region has allowed the wind and sea to carve out these culturally significant and visually striking shapes.
The absolute highlight is the evening hour. When the setting sun aligns perfectly with the mouth of the rock, it creates the illusion of Godzilla breathing fire. Photographers from all over flock to capture this 'Breathing Godzilla' moment. The timing of the sunset and the clouds is a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. Additionally, you can observe other nearby formations like Gamera Rock or the tail-shaped rocks, allowing you to witness the diverse geological changes along the coastline.
The most spectacular time to visit is during the evening. Because the visual impact changes based on the position of the sun and clouds, we highly recommend arriving shortly before sunset. April and October are considered the best months to visit, as the light and atmospheric conditions make it easiest to capture the sharp, clear silhouette of the 'breathing' Godzilla.
The primary activity here is landscape photography. Capturing the exact moment the sun enters the mouth of the rock is a unique experience found only here. You can also enjoy walking along the coast to observe the surrounding geosite and identify other unique rock shapes like Gamera Rock to better understand the local geography.
The Oga Peninsula, where Godzilla Rock is located, holds high value as a Geopark. The area is also home to relaxing hot spring-towns like Oga Onsenkyo. As you travel along the coastal routes, you can discover various other rock formations and natural wonders.
Since the site is located along the coast, the terrain can be uneven and windy. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you are visiting for sunset photography, please check the local sunset time in advance.
