Minna no Mori Gifu Media Cosmos is a multifaceted cultural facility that integrates library functions with community exchange spaces. Opened in July 2015, it was developed as part of a redevelopment project on the former site of the Gifu University Medical School and Hospital. Located at the foot of the majestic Mt. Kinka, the facility's most striking feature is its unique architectural design by the world-renowned architect Toyoshi Ito. The project was initiated to address the aging infrastructure and accessibility challenges of the former Gifu City Library. The selection of Pritzker Prize winner Toyoshi Ito brought international prestige to the design. Although the construction process faced adjustments due to the complexities of certifying the specialized wooden structures and fireproofing, the facility has been a massive success since its opening, recording over 1.2 million visitors in its first year. Furthermore, Gifu City maintains a sister-city relationship with Hangzhou, China, fostering international cultural exchange through book exchanges and staff interactions with the Hangzhou Library, making this a truly globalized cultural hub.
