Genkyu Rakurakuen is a designated National Place of Scenic Beauty located in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. The garden is composed of two distinct areas: Genkyu-en and Rakurakuen, each offering a unique atmosphere. Centered around a vast pond, the landscape utilizes the 'chisen-kaiyu-shiki' (stroll garden) technique, featuring hills and water features that perfectly embody the elegance of traditional Japanese garden design alongside historic architecture.
The history of this garden is profound, dating back to the early Edo period. It was meticulously developed and maintained by successive lords of the Hikone Clan. Genkyu-en is characterized by its buildings arranged around the pond, designed to mimic famous landscapes like the 'Eight Views of Omi.' Rakurakuen, which served as the residence for the clan's lords, preserves exquisite Sukiya-style architecture. This rich historical background makes the garden not just a scenic spot, but a precious cultural site that conveys the politics and culture of the era.
The garden features several significant structures and vistas. Centered around the large 'Gyoyaku-sho' pond, the landscape includes islands and artificial hills. Buildings such as 'Rinchekaku' and 'Hakkeitei' are positioned to extend over the water, creating a seamless integration between the architecture and the lakeside scenery. The design, which mimics the famous 'Eight Views of Omi,' showcases a sophisticated fusion of natural elements and man-made artistry.

In September, the garden hosts special events like the 'Listening to Insect Sounds at Genkyu-en,' which includes evening illuminations. The garden is located northeast of Hikone Castle, making it a perfect addition to a sightseeing itinerary. The surrounding area retains the atmosphere of an old castle town, with historic streets nearby. It is highly recommended to visit both the castle and the garden in one trip.
