The Genbei River is a scenic waterway approximately 1.5 km long, flowing through Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Its origin lies in the Kohama Pond within Rakuju-en, where Mount Fuji's abundant spring water gathers. While it historically served as an agricultural irrigation channel, it has been transformed into a symbol of Mishima's 'City of Water' identity. Through the dedicated efforts of citizens, local government, and NPOs, it is now a beautifully preserved riverside space. The area has been recognized by the Ministry of Environment as one of the '100 Best Waters in Japan' and has received design awards for its harmonious blend of urban and natural landscapes.
The river's name is said to originate from the excavation of the waterway by a local leader named Terao Genbei during the Muromachi period. Historically, it was vital to local life, even being used to cool vegetables in tin boats. During the rapid urbanization of the high-growth period, the river faced challenges such as declining water quality and volume. However, since the 1990s, the 'Genbei River Water Environment Improvement Project' has successfully transitioned the river from concrete embankments to a more natural, multi-faceted ecosystem. This restoration has created the breathtaking landscape seen today, where urban life and nature coexist seamlessly.

The river is adorned by 12 distinct bridges, each offering a unique charm, such as the historic 'Toki-no-Kane Bridge' and the atmospheric 'Genbei Bridge.' A well-maintained walking path allows visitors to enjoy the sight of Mount Fuji reflected on the water's surface and the lush vegetation. The river is a thriving habitat for rare plants like the Mishima-baikamo (water primrose) and various aquatic life, including Medaka fish. The flowing water continues to play a crucial role in supporting local agriculture as it moves toward the Nakago Onsuichi pond.
The Genbei River offers beautiful scenery year-round. On clear days, the transparency of the spring water and the reflection of Mount Fuji are particularly striking. You can enjoy different seasonal flora and the movement of aquatic life throughout the year. In the evening, the gentle sound of the flowing water and the soft city lights create a serene, tranquil atmosphere quite different from the bright daytime scenery.

While there are no formal paid programs, the best way to experience the river is through a leisurely stroll along the riverside paths. The area is a hub for NPO activities focused on environmental conservation, allowing visitors to witness the results of nature-driven restoration. You can observe diverse plants and animals up close or simply relax at nearby cafes while enjoying the soothing sounds of the water.
The area around the Genbei River is rich in Mishima's cultural heritage. Nearby, 'Rakuju-en' offers a chance to explore more of the natural environment and ponds fed by Mount Fuji's springs. The river is easily accessible from Mishima Station, making it a perfect stop during a day trip. Following the route toward Nakago Onsuichi provides a deeper insight into the relationship between local agriculture and water resources.

For a comfortable stroll, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and casual clothing suitable for outdoor environments.
