Gassan Ski Resort is located near Ubogadake, a sub-peak of Mt. Gassan in Nishikawa Town, Yamagata Prefecture. It features a highly unusual operating model, staying open from early April through late July, long after typical ski resorts have closed their seasons. This is possible due to the region's massive snowfall, which leaves abundant remaining snow well into the warmer months. Situated at a high altitude of 1,600m, it is renowned as a mecca for summer skiing. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, it serves as a vital base for accessing hiking trails, making it a versatile hub for various seasonal outdoor activities.
Mt. Gassan is a significant topographical landmark in this region. The resort is managed by Gassan Kanko Kaihatsu Co., Ltd., which focuses on utilizing the local natural environment. While lift operations cease during the heavy winter snow periods, a unique culture of 'riding on remaining snow' has taken root during the spring and summer. Furthermore, the area is home to historic hot spring-culture, with nearby destinations like Gassan Shizu Onsen, allowing visitors to experience a harmonious blend of mountain nature and traditional hot spring relaxation.

Due to its high elevation, the slopes offer breathtaking views of Lake Gassan on clear days. The terrain includes various difficulty levels: the Ubosawa Hut area for beginners, the Ubogadake area and large slopes for intermediate skiers, and the Ushikubi area for advanced riders. As the season progresses and snow thins, the scenery near the lift station changes beautifully. The Shimizu Course, which passes through a beech forest at the base of the mountain, often remains open until around Golden Week, offering a wonderful way to witness the seasonal transition of the forest.
Gassan Ski Resort transforms significantly with the seasons. From April to May, visitors can enjoy the changing snow quality during the spring skiing season. From June to July, the focus shifts toward hiking access and summer skiing. While the lift operating hours are generally from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, these times can fluctuate based on the season, weather, and snow conditions, so checking ahead is highly recommended. Please note that there are no night skiing facilities; activities are centered around daylight hours.

The primary activities are skiing and snowboarding during the spring and summer months. Visitors can use T-bars for riding or chairlifts for movement. From mid-June, the resort becomes a key access point for climbing Mt. Gassan. While lifts do not run during the peak winter months, the area is also known for backcountry skiing and snowmobiling. Simply taking the lift to the high altitude to enjoy the panoramic mountain views is an experience in itself.
Various lodges and mountain huts are scattered just below the ski resort. A short drive down the mountain leads to the Gassan Shizu Onsen area, lined with traditional inns featuring hot spring baths. To make your trip more fulfilling, we recommend combining your outdoor activities with a stay at these local accommodations. You can also plan your visit around nearby attractions such as Lake Gassan for a complete mountain getaway.
Appropriate gear for the season is essential. During spring skiing, temperatures can rise, so it is wise to bring clothing that can adapt to temperature changes, such as lightweight shirts. When using the lifts, please remove your skis or snowboard and carry them by hand. Some lifts may have holders for your equipment. Additionally, be aware that the path from the parking lot to the lift station may consist of concrete-paved surfaces, so choose suitable footwear. Always follow local mountain rules and etiquette when hiking or skiing.
