The Gassan Lake Fountain (Gassan Lake Great Fountain) is a landmark located in Lake Gassan within Nishikawa Town, Yamagata Prefecture. It serves as a symbol of Nishikawa Town's commitment to 'water-centric town development,' embodying the wish to convey the vital importance of water—the source of all life—to the world. This fountain is renowned for having one of the largest spray heights in Japan, characterized by its powerful and dynamic water movements. The patterns of the water change depending on the season and time of day, allowing visitors to feel the raw strength and beauty of nature.
The fountain was established alongside the completion of the Sagae Dam to symbolize the abundance of water resources in Nishikawa Town. The design is deeply rooted in the number '112,' which is a key figure related to the dam. For instance, the height of the Sagae Dam is 112m, and 112 households were relocated due to the dam's construction. Rather than being a mere tourist attraction, it serves as a cultural monument that shows respect for local water resources and the town's way of life alongside nature.
The greatest attraction is the spectacular water display that shoots high into the sky. Using a main nozzle positioned directly above and eight oscillating diffusion nozzles, the fountain features different spray patterns set for each season. This variety ensures that every visit offers a new and unique landscape. Additionally, during certain periods, the fountain is illuminated at night, offering a completely different-looking spectacle compared to the daytime. The harmony between the movement of the water and the surrounding natural environment is a view unique to this location.
The fountain operates from April to November. The displays are categorized into seasonal names and patterns: 'Spring Dance,' 'Summer Dance,' and 'Autumn Dance,' each tailored to the atmosphere of the respective season. The fountain sprays several times a day, typically once every hour, so you may not see it immediately upon arrival. We highly recommend checking the schedule in advance for a smooth experience. Please note that displays may be canceled without notice due to weather conditions, equipment inspections, or technical issues.
The area around Gassan Lake is a wonderful place for nature-based recreation. You can enjoy the scenery of the lake while watching the dynamic fountain displays. Gassan Lake is also famous for its abundant fish, attracting many anglers. However, please be aware that bringing boats into the dam lake or entering the dam site from the fountain area requires strict adherence to rules and prior application. When visiting the fountain, please respect the local rules and maintain proper etiquette to coexist with nature.
The area surrounding the fountain is blessed with a rich natural environment. Nishikawa Town lies at the foot of Mount Gassan and the Asahi Mountain Range, one of Japan's 100 famous mountains, characterized by permanent snow and primeval beech forests. The area features observation plazas to enjoy the dam scenery and various facilities to experience local nature. It is an excellent destination to include in a driving or hiking itinerary.
