Garyu Park is a vast urban park located in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture. It was designed and constructed by Seiroku Honda, Japan's first Doctor of Forestry. The centerpiece of the park is "Ryuga Pond," surrounded by approximately 600 cherry trees, a site selected as one of the "100 Famous Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan." The pine trees surrounding the pond are also recognized as part of the "100 Most Famous Pine Trees in Japan," creating a harmonious landscape of nature and design. With Mount Garyu rising behind the park, the scenery changes beautifully with every season.
The history of the park dates back to its construction in the early Showa era. The designer, Seiroku Honda, is a renowned figure who also designed the Meiji Jingu Shrine and Hibiya Park. The park's construction served a social purpose during the Great Depression, acting as a relief project for workers in the silk mills, which were the primary industry of Suzaka at the time. This makes the park not just a recreational area, but a place where local history and culture are deeply etched. The landscape is a sophisticated fusion of natural beauty and human-led design.
The park offers diverse scenery throughout the year. In spring, approximately 600 cherry trees bloom in full color around the pond. In autumn, you can enjoy vibrant foliage; in summer, lush greenery; and in winter, a serene snowy landscape. The view of the famous pine trees reflecting in the pond, set against the backdrop of mountains like Mt. Kuroki, Mt. Myoko, and Mt. Bandai, is truly spectacular. Additionally, the park houses the Suzaka City Zoo, where you can see animals like kangaroos and capybaras. Visitors can also enjoy boating on Ryuga Pond or explore the surrounding historical facilities.
