Ganryujima (officially known as Funashima) is a deserted island located in the Kanmon Strait, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The island features relatively flat terrain and is currently developed as a public park. Its most significant feature is being the legendary setting for the 1612 duel between the famous swordsmen Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro. The island includes an artificial beach, a multi-purpose plaza, and an observation area, allowing visitors to enjoy the majestic natural beauty of the Kanmon Strait against a profound historical backdrop.
Originally called 'Funashima,' the island's name changed to its current form, Ganryujima, in honor of the 'Ganryu' name associated with the duel. Historically, the area was a difficult passage for navigation due to nearby reefs. The island also holds a complex history, having hosted medical facilities for cholera during the Meiji era and serving as a strictly managed military fortification area prior to World-War II. Although it became uninhabited in 1973, it has since been revitalized as a significant historical and tourist destination.
The island is adorned with various monuments that symbolize its history. At the observation plaza, statues of Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro stand facing each other, vividly recreating the tension of their legendary duel. Near the pier, you will find the 'Ganryujima Literary Monument' and the 'Sasaki Ganryu Monument' erected during the Meiji era. From the walking paths on the eastern coast, you can observe large vessels navigating the Kanmon Strait up close, while the artificial beach and multi-purpose plaza offer a peaceful space to relax amidst nature.
The best months to visit are April and May, when the weather is mild and pleasant for exploring the island. In May, during the 'Shimonoseki Kaikyo Festival,' special events such as reenactments of the famous duel may be organized as part of the Ganryujima Festival. Additionally, the island sometimes features beautiful light-ups, offering a serene and mystical atmosphere during the evening hours.
Main activities include leisurely strolls through the park and the artificial beach. Under certain conditions, visitors can enjoy barbecues at the 'Rest Area' (prior application is required). During the ferry ride provided by Kanmon Kisen, passengers can enjoy information regarding the history of Ganryujima and the surrounding scenery. For a fun touch, there are also photo props shaped like the faces of Musashi and Kojiro for memorable photography.
For a spectacular view of Ganryujima, visit the 'Kaikyo Yume Tower' in Shimonoseki. From the observation room on the 30th floor (153m high), you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama of the island and the Kanmon Strait. Other great vantage points include 'Hinoyama Park' and the waterfront near the Karato Market area.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for light activity. Please be aware that there are no shops, vending machines, water fountains, or trash collection facilities on the island. You must bring your own drinking water, food, and bags to carry your trash back with you. Note that certain areas are private property of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and are strictly off-limits. Smoking and swimming are prohibited. Always check the final ferry departure time to ensure you do not miss the last boat back to the mainland.
