Ganmon, located in Shika Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, is a breathtaking landscape shaped by the powerful waves of the Sea of Japan. The area is characterized by its natural sculptural beauty, featuring a sea cave that offers a direct view of the horizon. By taking a sightseeing boat, you can experience a perspective impossible from the shore, witnessing the dynamic rock formations up close and feeling one with the nature of Noto Kogon.
The scenery of Ganmon has been celebrated for centuries. In 1853, it was even featured in the masterpiece 'Rokujushuyu Meisho Zue' by the famous ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige. The area is rich in local lore; to the south lies Fukura Port, home to the old Fukuura Lighthouse, one of Japan's oldest wooden Western-style lighthouses. To the north, legends tell of 'Yoshitsune's Hidden Boat.' The area is also known as a filming location for the movie 'Zero Focus,' specifically the 'Yase Cliffs,' adding a layer of cinematic history to the landscape.
From the sightseeing boat, you will encounter the towering 'Taka-no-su Rock' and the 'Gobanjima' (checkerboard island), which displays a striking geometric pattern. These dramatic shapes are best appreciated from the water. During the cruise, you might even see black-tailed shearwaters flying close to the boat. Additionally, the captain often provides commentary on the Noto Kogon area, enriching your visual experience with local knowledge. One of the most magical moments is looking out through the sea cave toward the horizon, especially during sunset when the light creates a sublime atmosphere.
The sightseeing boat generally operates from 9:00 to 16:00. We highly recommend visiting during the late afternoon to witness the sunset through the sea cave. Please note that the service is closed for the winter season from late November to mid-March. Since cruises may be canceled due to weather or sea conditions, it is wise to check the status before your visit. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons, so plan your trip to see the scenery at its best.
The main attraction is the Noto Kogon sightseeing cruise. From the deck, you can enjoy the harmony of mountains and sea, with views of Mount Takazume. After your cruise, visit the 'Ganmon CRUISE & SHOP' to enjoy local delicacies such as seasonal 'Sea Salt Soft Serve Ice Cream,' homemade lemonade, or the famous Noto 'Hippari Mochi.' You can also find local specialties like Noto soy sauce, Nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) products, and original cruise merchandise.
The area around the cruise route is dotted with historical landmarks. Near Fukura Port, you can find the historic lighthouse, while the northern area holds the legends of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The rugged cliffs used in film productions are also part of this scenic landscape. For travelers arriving by car, there is a large free parking lot available, making access to the site very convenient.
