Overview & Charm

Furoyama Park is a beautiful natural park located in Hanawa Town, Fukushima Prefecture. The defining feature of this location is the magnificent plantation of approximately 4,000 mountain azalea plants. During the peak blooming season, the entire mountainside is transformed into a sea of vibrant red, a sight so spectacular that it has been selected as one of the '100 Best Green Scenes of Fukushima' and one of the '100 Selected Fukushima Heritage Sites.' It is a premier destination for those seeking profound natural beauty.

History & Cultural Background

The mountain azaleas found here hold deep historical significance. They were planted by the members of a local youth association following the end of the Russo-Japanese War. These plants were established as the 'Tree of Hope' for the town and have been meticulously cared for and nurtured by the local community for over 120 years. This makes the park not just a natural site, but a place where local history and nature are deeply intertwined.

Main Highlights

The absolute highlight of the park is the blooming period of the mountain azaleas, which occurs from late April to early May. During this window, the sight of 4,000 plants blooming in unison turns the mountain slopes into a brilliant crimson landscape. To celebrate this natural wonder, photography contests are often held during this period, capturing the breathtaking scenery.

Seasonal & Time-of-Day Recommendations

The most dramatic changes in scenery occur during the spring. The peak viewing season is typically from late April to early May. Outside of this period, visitors can still enjoy the serene natural landscapes of the park. The park is open 24 hours a day, allowing for flexible visits at any time, though the spring bloom is the most highly recommended period.

Experiences & Activities

Visitors can enjoy walking through the park to observe the natural scenery and enjoy a peaceful stroll. During the spring blooming season, the area becomes a popular spot for photography, especially in conjunction with local photo contests. Exploring the natural environment on foot is the primary way to experience the park's beauty.
