Funaoka Castle Ruins Park, located in Shibata Town, Miyagi Prefecture, is a beautiful destination where history and nature harmonize perfectly. Originally the site of a residence for the Shibata clan until the Meiji Restoration, it is now celebrated as one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in the Tohoku region. The park's greatest feature is the panoramic view offered by its high elevation. From the summit, visitors can enjoy a sweeping vista of the Shibata townscape, the Zao mountain range, and even the Pacific Ocean, earning it a place in the 'Miyagi Zao 36 Scenic Views.'
This location once served as a vital strategic point. Due to its geography near the confluence of the Shiroishi and Ara Rivers, it became a bottleneck for transport and trade, making it a crucial site for the construction of Funaoka Castle. Historically, it is known as the residence of the Shibata clan. The park contains various symbols related to these historical events, serving as a precious site that tells the story of the local heritage.
The park is structured into the 'Honmaru' (inner sanctum) at the summit, the 'Ninomaru' (second enclosure) on the mid-slope, and the 'Sannomaru' (third enclosure) area near the main gate. The most iconic landmark is the 'Funaoka Peace Kannon Statue' standing at the summit. This 24-meter-tall statue was erected through the private funds of a local resident to pray for the repose of his late wife and for world peace. Additionally, the 'Community Garden Hana-no-oka Shibata' offers seasonal beauty, featuring well-maintained tulips, roses, and various other flowers that provide a sense of healing to visitors.
The park's appearance changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring (early to late April), the 'Shibata Sakura Festival' is held, with approximately 1,000 cherry trees in full bloom. The view of the cherry blossom tunnels alongside the Shiroishi River embankment is truly breathtaking. In autumn, the 'Miyagi Grand Chrysanthemum Exhibition' showcases the elegance of chrysanthemum displays. For the best experience, visit during bright daylight hours on clear days to fully appreciate the panoramic views of the Zao mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
Visitors can enjoy peaceful strolls through nature and a deep sense of history. To assist with the elevation changes, a slope car (operating during specific periods) connects the parking area to the summit, allowing for smoother movement. The area around the Peace Kannon statue is perfect for relaxing while taking in the vast scenery. The seasonal gardens are also excellent spots for photography. The area surrounding the park is rich in natural beauty, particularly along the Shiroishi River.
