It is celebrated as one of the 'Eight Views of Kujukushima.' A unique characteristic of this spot is its relatively low altitude compared to other observatories in the area. This proximity to sea level allows visitors to enjoy a much more powerful and intimate view of the islands, making the landscape feel as if it is right before your eyes. While the vibrant colors of the blue sea and islands are spectacular under clear skies, the changing expressions of the landscape during cloudy or rainy weather also offer a unique, poetic charm.

Funakoshi Observatory serves as a core part of the local tourism resource, offering one of the most intimate ways to experience the natural geological formations of K'ujukushima. The greatest draw is the sense of presence of the islands appearing right in front of you. Because the elevation is low, the distance to the sea is shorter than at higher viewpoints, allowing for a clear and detailed observation of the islands' shapes. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons and weather; you can enjoy the refreshing, bright vistas on sunny days or the mysterious, atmospheric landscapes filled with mist and clouds during rainy weather.
The scenery is beautiful year-round, but the period around sunset is particularly striking. The contrast between the changing colors of the sky and the sea creates an unforgettable view. When planning your visit, consider the sunset times: in summer (around June), it remains bright until after 7:00 PM, whereas in winter (around December), the sun sets as early as 5:00 PM. Planning your arrival around these times can enhance your experience.

Funakoshi Observatory is conveniently located on the route toward the Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort and the Kujukushima Botanical Garden 'Mokira-ra.' Visiting these sites together allows for a deeper exploration of the Kujukushima natural environment. The area is easily accessible by car, with parking facilities available nearby.
There is no admission fee for the observatory itself. However, if you use nearby commercial facilities, credit cards or transportation IC cards may be accepted in addition to cash. It is helpful to check in advance.
As this is a natural scenic spot, there is no permanent English-speaking staff on-site. It is recommended to check maps or digital guides beforehand.
