Fukuzenji Taichoro is the guest hall of Fukuzenji, a Shingon Buddhist temple located in Tomonoura, Fuku-yama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Built around 1690 during the Edo period, it served as a prestigious reception hall for the Korean使節団 (Korean envoys). The building boasts an exceptional location overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, specifically the islands of Sensui and Benten, a view traditionally celebrated as "Nitto Daiichi Keisho" (The First Scenic View in the East). Beyond its architectural value, the serene landscape provides a moment of profound tranquility for all visitors.
The history of Taichoro dates back to the late 17th century. It played a vital role in hosting the Korean missions (Joseon Tongsinsa) sent to Japan. This site was not just a scenic spot but a hub for cultural and diplomatic exchange between Japanese scholars and Korean intellectuals. In 1711, the view from this very spot was praised as one of the most beautiful in the region. Furthermore, the area holds significance in Japan's modern history; it was a site where Sakamoto Ryoma and the Kaientai group engaged in crucial negotiations during the Bakumatsu period, marking a turning point in Japan's transition toward modernization.
The greatest allure of Taichoro is the panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea from the tatami rooms. The sight of the calm sea and the floating islands looks like a traditional Japanese ink painting. This iconic scenery has even been featured in the opening of the famous anime "Sazae-san" and various musical album covers, making it a familiar sight to many. The architecture itself is a precious cultural asset, preserving the elegant style of the Edo period. Sitting quietly in the room and watching the sea change its expression with the light and seasons is a truly unique experience.
Taichoro offers different charms depending on the season. For the clearest views of the blue sea and lush green islands, visiting during stable weather periods is ideal. During the day, the contrast between the sea and the islands is vivid and refreshing. At sunset, the sky and sea blend into a breathtaking golden gradient, creating a deeply peaceful atmosphere. Because the color of the water and the density of the island greenery change with the seasons, returning at different times of the year will reveal a completely different side of this landscape.

Please dress appropriately as this is a sacred temple site and a historic building. Since you will be required to remove your shoes to enter the rooms, we recommend wearing easy-to-remove shoes and clean socks. Cash (Japanese Yen) is required for the admission fee.
