The Fukuyama Museum of Art is a municipal museum located in Nishimachi, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Opened in 1988, the museum is characterized by its location that integrates seamlessly with the historic landscape of Fukuyama Castle. Utilizing the site of the castle's former outer moat, the museum serves as a cultural hub for the region, surrounded by beautiful gardens. The collection spans a wide variety of genres, from Japanese modern art to 20th-century European art, and an extraordinary collection of Japanese swords.
The museum was established to promote local arts and culture. The site itself is deeply connected to the history of the castle, as it utilizes parts of the former outer moat and Maruyama. Designed by Sato Sogo Plan, the museum has been a cultural landmark for Fukuyama since its opening in 1988. Many of the works on display are related to artists with connections to Fukuyama City or the Setouchi region, providing a deep sense of local history.
The exhibition content is incredibly diverse. Visitors can explore works by artists connected to the Setouchi area, as well as significant collections of Japanese modern art and European modern art. Notable names in the collection include European masters like Giorgio de Chirico and Albert Marquet, alongside prominent Japanese artists such as Ryusei Kishida and Rojin Kitahata.
One of the most remarkable features is the "Komatsu Collection" of Japanese swords. Collected by Yasuhiro Komatsu, an honorary citizen of Fukuyama, this collection includes numerous National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, such as the swords Tachi Norifusa and Tachi Chushu-sumi Sa. These pieces represent the absolute pinnacle of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and metalworking.
The museum is surrounded by Fukuyama Castle and its expansive park, offering different scenery throughout the seasons. The landscape is particularly stunning during the spring cherry blossom season and the autumn foliage season. The museum is open from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, making it a perfect destination for a peaceful daytime visit.
The museum hosts regular special exhibitions, with approximately 4 to 6 special events held throughout the year. This ensures that visitors can always encounter new themes and artistic styles. Additionally, the "Fukuyama Calligraphy Museum" has moved to the second floor, allowing visitors to experience the profound art of Japanese calligraphy. Between viewing exhibits, you can relax and enjoy a quiet moment at the museum's tea room.
Since the museum is located within Fukuyama Castle Park, it is surrounded by numerous historical sites. It is easily accessible to major tourist spots such as the Fukuyama Castle Tenshu (keep), the historic castle grounds, and the charming old streets of Tomonoura. It is easy to plan a day trip that combines a cultural visit to the museum with a walk through the historic castle-town area.
To protect the artworks, there are strict rules regarding photography and filming. Please follow the instructions provided within the exhibition areas, as rules may vary by exhibit. For clothing, a calm and respectful style is recommended. Please refrain from eating or drinking inside the museum, except in the designated tea room area. The facility is barrier-free, with wheelchair-accessible entrances and restrooms available.
