Takao Fukuyama Zoo (formerly known as Fukuyama City Zoo) is a public zoo nestled in the abundant nature of Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. From 2026, the facility will evolve into a new stage under the name "Takao Fukuyama Zoo." The most significant attraction is the extremely rare opportunity to see the only Borneo elephants kept in Japan. Additionally, the zoo provides an excellent educational environment where visitors can observe a wide variety of animals, including Asian elephants, carnivores, birds, and reptiles, up close.
The zoo features a vast area where you can feel the changing seasons, with exhibits designed to allow animals to live in conditions close to their natural habitats. Rather than just a place to "see," the zoo emphasizes "interaction" and "learning," serving as a center for social education where visitors can deepen their understanding of animals and the importance of environmental conservation.
The history of the zoo dates back to 1978, when it began as a private leisure facility known as "Tomiya Pond Zoo" or "Tomiya Leisure Land." At that time, it served as a core leisure destination alongside nearby golf courses and campsites. In 1978, the facility was nationalized by Fukuyama City and has since developed into its current form.
Despite facing challenges such as aging facilities and management issues over the years, gradual renovations have been underway since 1995. Notably, in 2011, the carnivore exhibition area was revitalized as the "Hunter's Castle," highlighting the zoo's commitment to improving animal habitats. Today, it serves as a local natural park and a hub for promoting animal welfare and the spirit of animal protection to future generations.
The zoo features several attractive exhibition zones categorized by theme.
First, at the powerful "Hunter's Castle," you can observe the strength of carnivores such as lions, Amur tigers, Amur leopards, pumas, servals, and caracals. The "Monkey Zone" allows you to enjoy the active movements of macaques, squirrel monkeys, and lemurs.
The "Savanna Zone" offers a taste of the African plains, featuring Hartmann's zebra and giraffes in a spacious setting. Furthermore, in the Penguin Zone, you can see Humboldt and Gentoo penguins, while the "Flying Cage" offers a dynamic view of various bird species. The Asian elephants and the rare Borneo elephants are undoubtedly the most iconic symbols of the zoo.
Takao Fukuyama Zoo shows a different face in every season. In spring, you can see animals becoming active amidst fresh greenery. Summer brings deep greenery and attracts many families seeking a natural escape. In autumn, the changing foliage provides a serene atmosphere for observation.
We recommend visiting in the morning when animals are most active. Depending on the season, the zoo also holds events like animal lectures or workshops. Checking the event schedule in advance will ensure a more enriching visit.
The zoo offers more than just viewing; it provides opportunities for deeper learning. For example, the bi-annual "Regular Meetings" include animal lectures and craft workshops.
Members of the "Friends of the Zoo" can also access specialized information through the quarterly publication "Saezuri," which covers animal reports and veterinary insights. These activities help build a deeper connection and affection for the animals. For children, learning about the importance of the natural environment through these experiences becomes an unforgettable memory.
The area surrounding the zoo is rich in nature. Nearby, the calm scenery of Tomiya Pond reflects its history as a leisure spot. Fukuyama City also boasts many historical structures and gourmet spots, making it easy to combine a zoo visit with sightseeing in eastern Hiroshima. With good car access, it is an ideal destination for a day trip.
