Fukushuen Garden is the only authentic Chinese-style garden in Okinawa, established to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Naha City and Fuzhou City, China, as well as the 70th anniversary of Naha's municipal system. The garden faithfully recreates the iconic landscapes of the Fuzhou region, specifically the 'Three Mountains, Two Pagodas, and One River,' using traditional Fuzhou craftsmanship and materials. The garden is divided into three distinct spatial concepts: 'Ming' (Bright), 'On' (Calm), and 'Ka' (Elegant). With its meticulously arranged ponds, waterfalls, bridges, corridors, and rock formations, it is truly a masterpiece of 'walking art.'
The garden serves as a symbol of the deep friendship between Naha and Fuzhou. It is rooted in the history of exchange between the Kume Village (Kuninda) people—who have had long-standing ties with China since the Ryukyu Kingdom era—and the Chinese mainland. The architecture and scenery are designed to mirror the natural beauty of Fuzhou, serving not just as a garden, but as a hub for cultural exchange. Following a recent renewal, the garden has expanded its appeal through nighttime illuminations and various cultural events.
Visitors can discover exquisite details throughout the garden that replicate the scenery of Fuzhou. The ponds, waterfalls, and traditional structures like pavilions and corridors offer different expressions depending on the viewing angle. The calculated beauty of the architecture reflected in the water is a hallmark of Chinese garden design. Additionally, the adjacent 'Kuninda Terrace' offers exhibits that allow visitors to visually understand the intersection of Okinawan and Chinese cultures through the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom and Kume Village.
The garden presents a completely different face depending on the time of day. During the day, you can enjoy the vibrant colors of the plants and stone arrangements under the sunlight. At night (18:00–21:00), the garden is illuminated, creating a mystical and enchanting atmosphere. Depending on the season, you may also experience cultural events such as Lunar New Year celebrations or live performances of Ryukyu classical music, allowing for a deeper cultural immersion.
Enjoy a peaceful stroll or photography within the serene environment. At the adjacent Kuninda Terrace, you can explore historical exhibits or enjoy food and drinks on the observation terrace. The restaurant offers a variety of international fusion cuisine centered around Chinese flavors, allowing you to dine while gazing at the beautiful garden scenery. The space also hosts cultural events, such as music performances, blending the sounds of tradition with the garden's atmosphere.
Located in central Naha, Fukushuen Garden is easily accessible and close to many tourist spots. It is a convenient stop during a sightseeing trip near Kokusai Dori. Nearby attractions include the Kume Shiseibyo Temple, Matsuyama Park, and the historic Naminoue Shrine and Beach area. The garden is approximately a 15-minute drive from Naha Airport, making it an easy addition to an urban sightseeing itinerary.
As the garden features uneven terrain, stone steps, and paths around ponds, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. There are no strict dress codes, but practical clothing for walking is best. Payments for admission can be made via cash or credit card. To preserve the tranquil atmosphere, please maintain a quiet demeanor and respect the plants and structures. While photography is generally allowed, please check rules for commercial photography.
