The Great Ginkgo of Fukusada is a massive ginkgo tree located within the grounds of Hosen-ji Temple in Nakahechi, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. With an estimated age of approximately 400 years, it is designated as a municipal natural monument. The most striking feature of this tree is its unique silhouette. While typical ginkgo trees grow with a straight, thick trunk, this specimen lost its main trunk at a height of about 5 to 6 meters long ago. Having survived this catastrophic damage, it grew by branching out from the lower part of the trunk, resulting in a rare and powerful presence that commands attention.
This ginkgo tree is more than just a plant; it is a silent witness to the region's history. The historical event of losing its main trunk reflects the harsh environmental challenges the tree has overcome. Its current form is a testament to its incredible resilience and life force. The many branch bases serve as evidence of its survival through past damage. Today, the tree even functions as a small ecosystem, with humus collecting in the crevices and supporting other plant life. This area is also steeped in history, with nearby sites such as the Osakamoto Oji reflecting the ancient cultural context of the region.
The greatest highlight is the golden landscape during the autumn foliage season. From mid to late November, the vast canopy turns a brilliant yellow, completely transforming the surrounding scenery. Visitors can also observe the unique structure of the trunk, which branches out significantly at 4 meters above the ground. Please note that while nighttime illuminations were held in the past, they have been discontinued to protect the tree's health and ensure its preservation. We recommend viewing the tree's unique sculptural beauty and vibrant leaf colors in the bright daylight.
The best time to visit is during the autumn foliage season, from mid-November to early December, when the leaves reach their most vibrant state. During the daytime, the fine texture of the leaves and the structural details of the trunk are clearly visible, making it an excellent time for photography. In the winter, the strong, skeletal structure of the trunk becomes even more apparent after the leaves have fallen. While the tree shows different expressions throughout the seasons, aim for the latter half of November to experience the most colorful scenery.
Near the Great Ginkgo of Fukusada, you can experience the beauty of natural forms up close. You can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the quiet grounds of Hosen-ji Temple while feeling the weight of 400 years of history. The surrounding area along National Route 311 also offers seasonal scenery; for example, around June, you can enjoy colorful flowers at nearby hydrangea gardens. This allows for a sightseeing experience that combines nature observation with seasonal beauty.
The Great Ginkgo of Fukusada is located in the Nakahechi area of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. Nearby, you can find the historical remains of the Osakamoto Oji, offering a glimpse into the history of the ancient trails. It is conveniently located about a 10-minute drive from the Michi-no-Eki (Roadside Station) 'Kumano Kodo Nakahechi' and about 20 minutes from other major points, making it an ideal base for driving or walking tours through the rich natural environment.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes. While the area around the tree is relatively paved, it is a natural environment, so sneakers or athletic shoes are recommended. Regarding clothing, please prepare for the temperature; during the autumn foliage season, temperatures can drop, so bringing a warm jacket is advisable. As the tree is located within a temple's sacred grounds, please maintain a quiet and respectful attitude. Avoid leaving any trash behind and respect the local customs. While there is free parking available, spaces are limited, so please use them courteously.
