Fukuoka Tower is a 234m radio tower located in the Seaside Momochi district of Sawara-ku, Fukuoka City. Renowned as Japan's tallest seaside tower, its exterior is a striking equilateral triangular prism covered in 8,000 half-mirrors. These mirrors reflect the surrounding light and scenery, making the tower an iconic and harmonious landmark of Fukuoka.
The tower was constructed as a monument for the Asian-Pacific Exposition (known as Yokatopia) held in 1989, and as a symbol for the 100th anniversary of Fukuoka's municipal administration. Originally known by the nickname "Mirror Sail," it was a highly popular spot during the exposition. Since then, while serving as a vital broadcasting infrastructure, it has evolved into a beloved observation facility for both locals and tourists. In 2019, to celebrate its 30th anniversary, the tower underwent a major renovation to become a facility offering cutting-edge digital experiences.
The ultimate highlight is the top-floor observation deck located 123m above the ground. Reached in just 70 seconds via elevator, this space offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama spanning from the Fukuoka cityscape to the vast Hakata Bay. Following the 2019 renewal, the tower introduced exhibits utilizing VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) technologies. Visitors can enjoy immersive experiences that blend the outdoor scenery with digital visuals, such as the "Sky Capsule" experience where it feels as though capsules are falling from the sky.
The tower's appearance changes beautifully depending on the time and season. During the day, it offers an expansive view of the blue sea, sky, and the urban landscape of Fukuoka. At night, the "Sky Illumination" features phosphorescent stones scattered across the floor, creating a magical effect where light glows around your feet and above your head, making you feel enveloped by the night sky.
