Fukuoka Castle Ruins (Maizuru Park) is a national historical site located in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City. Built in the 1600s, the site has been developed into a vast, beautiful park. Visitors can explore the remnants of the original castle, including impressive stone walls, the Tamon Yagura tower (a designated Important Cultural Property), and various reconstructed gates and turrets. Despite being located in the heart of the city, the park offers a serene natural environment rich in diverse plants and wildlife.
The castle was originally constructed by Kuroda Nagamasa. The architectural design and the strategic placement of the stone walls serve as precious historical records of the era's engineering techniques. For instance, the Minami-no-maru Tamon Yagura and the adjacent corner turret are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The Shiomi Yagura, built during the Edo period, is notable for its traditional construction method using natural and split stones. Many of these historical structures are meticulously preserved and restored through the city's conservation efforts and private donations.
There are numerous spots where history comes to life. The Tenshudai (keep platform), the Tamon Yagura, and the reconstructed Shiomi Yagura are essential stops. The Shiomi Yagura's stone walls stand about 1.7m high and showcase the authentic Edo-period masonry style. Another highlight is the Najima Gate, which once served as a side gate for Najima Castle and is a designated cultural asset of Fukuoka City. The park also retains the traces of the castle's moats (Moats 1 through 6), creating a beautiful historical landscape integrated with water features.
The park's appearance changes beautifully with the seasons. April is particularly spectacular during the "Fukuoka Castle Sakura Festival," when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. You can also enjoy observing various plants and wildlife throughout the year. We recommend strolling during the bright daylight hours to appreciate the harmony between the stone walls and greenery, or visiting in the late afternoon for a more tranquil atmosphere. Recently, special evening illuminations of the Tenshudai framework have also become a popular attraction.
To deepen your understanding of the history, you can visit the "Fukuoka Castle Old Exploration Museum," which features ancient maps and scale models of the castle structure. The information counter provides guidance on recommended walking routes. Additionally, you can participate in free guided tours (such as the Fukuoka Castle/Shiomi Yagura course) to learn professional insights about the Najima Gate, Shimohashi Go-mon, and other historical landmarks.
Located in central Fukuoka, the site is close to major landmarks like Ohori Park. It is also easily accessible from the Hakata area, making it a perfect base for city sightseeing. Areas like the San-no-maru Plaza and Koro-kan Plaza are frequently used for local events and traditional martial arts demonstrations.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended as the park is quite large.
