The Fujikura Water Source Facility is the site of a former water intake system (including a reservoir, dam, and sedimentation pond) located in Akita City, Akita Prefecture. This facility is designated as a National Important Cultural Property (Modernization Heritage), representing a high level of historical value in the history of Japan's modern waterworks. Today, the area surrounding the sedimentation pond ruins has been developed into 'Fujikura Memorial Park,' serving as a public space for relaxation. Visitors can observe the remnants of Meiji-era civil engineering, such as the dam and iron truss bridge, preserved within a beautiful natural setting.
The construction of this facility began in 1903 (Meiji 36) to provide drinking water and fire prevention water to Akita City. Partial water supply began in 1907 (Meiji 40), and the entire facility was completed in 1911 (Meiji 44). For approximately 70 years, it played a vital role in supplying drinking water to the citizens of Akita. In 1973 (Showa 48), the water source was switched to the Ogimachi River, and water intake ceased. In 1993 (Heisei 5), it was recognized for its historical significance as the first facility of its kind to be designated as a National Important Cultural Property under the modernization heritage category.
The park contains various structures that showcase the engineering technology of the Meiji era. Key structures include the main dam (main weir), the secondary dam, the discharge way, the iron truss bridge, the water pipe, and the now-filled sedimentation pond. These are collectively designated as Important Cultural Properties. The main dam, a gravity concrete dam, is a precious relic that allows visitors to observe the civil engineering techniques of that era firsthand. Additionally, monuments and statues marking this site as the 'Birthplace of Akita's Waterworks' are installed throughout the park.
Fujikura Memorial Park offers different charms depending on the season. The most recommended time to visit is from April to May, when the Yoshino cherry trees (Yamazakura) surrounding the park are in full bloom. Visiting during the bright daylight hours of spring allows you to enjoy the stunning contrast between the pink blossoms and the historic structures. Daytime is also the best time to observe the intricate details of the dam and the iron truss bridge clearly.
As a well-maintained park, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the established walking paths to observe the historical infrastructure. The park features resting areas such as gazebos and benches, making it a perfect place to relax in nature. Please note that due to heavy rain or weather conditions, certain paths between the dams may be closed for safety; it is recommended to check local conditions before visiting.
The Fujikura Water Source is located in the Yamauchi area of Akita City. The surrounding landscape is rich in nature, creating a seamless integration between the historical dam structures and the natural environment. It is an excellent destination for those interested in tracing the history of the infrastructure that supported the modernization of Akita.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the park. While there is a parking lot (capacity for 10 cars), please be cautious when driving as the bridges and farm roads leading to the park are narrow. Also, please check local notices as some paths may be restricted due to weather.
