Fugaku Wind Cave is a designated National Natural Monument located within the Aokigahara Forest in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture. This lava cave was formed during the cooling process of lava flows from Mt. Fuji's eruptions, resulting in a breathtaking and unique landscape that showcases the wonders of nature. One of its most striking features is the constant low temperature inside the cave, providing a refreshing and cool environment even during the peak of summer. It is one of the representative nature sightseeing spots in Yamanashi where you can witness the raw power of geological formation.
The cave is a vital geological specimen, formed as part of the lava flows from the volcanic activity of Mt. Fuji. While the cave can be visited year-round, it is an exceptional spot for escaping the heat during the summer months (July–August). However, please be aware that temperatures inside the cave can drop significantly during winter or early spring, so prepare for the temperature difference. Visiting during bright daylight hours allows you to enjoy the beautiful contrast between the lush greenery at the entrance and the dark, mysterious depths of the cave interior.
Visitors can explore the interior of the lava cave while walking along the established paths. The area surrounding Fugaku Wind Cave is enveloped in the rich natural environment of the Aokigahara Forest. It is common to visit the nearby Narusawa Ice Cave, which offers similar icy geological formations, in the same trip. Furthermore, the nearby West Lake (Saiko) and Shoji Lake offer beautiful views of Mt. Fuji and wonderful opportunities for nature walks.
Because the cave floor can be wet and uneven, we highly recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. As the temperature remains low throughout the year, please bring a light jacket or extra layers for warmth regardless of the season.
