Fuefuki River Isawa Ukai is a traditional summer event held along the banks of the Fuefuki River in Fuefuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture. The most distinctive feature is the "Kachi-u" (walking cormorant fishing) method, which is extremely rare in Japan. Unlike typical cormorant fishing performed from a boat, the master fisherman enters the river directly to control a single cormorant. The sight of the fisherman and the bird working in perfect harmony to catch fish is a masterful display of a technique passed down through generations. Following the fishing demonstration, the "Isawa Onsen Ukai Fireworks" illuminate the night sky, creating a breathtaking fusion of ancient tradition and modern light.
The history of cormorant fishing in this region spans over 800 years. The "Kachi-u" style is a unique traditional technique that evolved to adapt to the local topography and environment, holding immense cultural value. This is not merely a tourist event, but a vital piece of cultural heritage that has been carefully preserved by the local community for centuries.
The primary highlight is the sequence of movements as the master fisherman stands in the river, controlling a single cormorant to catch fish. The moment of synchronization between the human and the bird is a sight found only in this specific location. Furthermore, immediately following the fishing demonstration at 20:50, the "Isawa Onsen Ukai Fireworks" will be launched for approximately 10 minutes. Because the fireworks are launched very close to the riverbank, the impact of the sound and light is incredibly powerful. Unlike large-scale commercial fireworks festivals, this offers a more intimate and serene atmosphere for viewing.
The event is held exclusively during the summer, typically from late July to mid-August. It takes place on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The cormorant fishing demonstration runs from 20:00 to 20:50, followed immediately by the 10-minute fireworks display starting at 20:50. As this is a nighttime event, the surroundings will be dark.
The viewing area is located on the riverbank in front of the Fuefuki City Hall main building. You can watch the performance for free from the developed embankment or stone steps. During the demonstration, spectators often applaud when the cormorant successfully catches a fish. You may also see people strolling around the nearby hot spring area wearing traditional yukata.
The venue is situated right in front of the Fuefuki City Hall. The nearby Isawa Onsen area is filled with numerous accommodation facilities, hot spring resorts, and restaurants. A popular way to enjoy the event is to combine it with a stay at a local hot spring hotel.
