The Former Russian Consulate is a Western-style building characterized by its striking red brick and white decorative accents, situated on a hill overlooking the beautiful port of Hakodate. While preserving its profound historical character, the building was reborn on July 12, 2025, as 'HOTEL Byakurin HAKODATE.' Operating as a small-scale luxury hotel with only six all-suite rooms, it has elevated the atmosphere of the former consulate into a sophisticated, modern luxury space.
This building was originally completed in 1906 (Meiji 39) as Japan's first Russian Consulate. Following a major fire, it was reconstructed in 1908 (Meiji 41). Throughout its history, it served as the consulate for the Russian Empire and, from 1927, the Soviet Union. In 2021, the property was acquired by the automotive wholesaler Sovrin with the goal of preservation and revitalization. Today, it serves a new role as a premium accommodation while maintaining its significant value as a designated historical landscape building.
The greatest charm lies in its classic exterior, where the contrast between the red brick and white stone (or plaster) creates an elegant aesthetic. The white decorations on the window frames and corners, paired with the black sloping roof, create a truly majestic atmosphere. The property consists of two main sections: the Historical Consulate Building and the newly added Wellness Wing. The Consulate Building houses the main dining room, a sushi restaurant, a bar, and a gift shop, while the Wellness Wing contains the front desk, wellness space, gym, and library. Every guest room is an all-suite, allowing visitors to experience the exquisite historical architectural details in a highly private setting.

In winter and early spring, you can enjoy the striking architectural beauty against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and the serene port scenery.
