Farm Tomita is one of Japan's most iconic lavender farms, located in Nakafurano, Sorachi District, Hokkaido. Spanning approximately 15 hectares, the vast estate features a diverse array of flowers that create a constantly changing tapestry of colors throughout the seasons. It is widely recognized as one of Hokkaido's most photogenic spots, especially during the peak lavender blooming season. Beyond the visual beauty, the farm offers an immersive sensory experience through various facilities and cafes that focus on the themes of floral scents and tastes.
The farm has developed as a destination that seamlessly blends agriculture with tourism, utilizing the rich natural environment of Hokkaido. With a long history of cultivating flowers centered around lavender, the site includes a museum that shares the history and culture of lavender cultivation. Furthermore, the architecture and design of the facilities—including elements inspired by Dutch floral design—elevate the farm from a simple agricultural site to a space of significant aesthetic and cultural value.
The farm is divided into several areas, each offering a unique atmosphere. Key areas include the 'Kajin no Hatake' (Flower Person's Field) with its expansive views, as well as fields that showcase the colors of spring and autumn. Visitors can also explore the 'Greenhouse,' which allows for plant observation regardless of the season. Other specialized facilities include the 'Distillation House,' where essential oils are processed, the 'Perfume House,' where you can experience perfume making, and the 'Mori no Ya' (Forest House), which features an observation deck for a panoramic view of the landscape.
The best time to visit depends on the season. In mid-April, you can see crocuses, followed by spring flowers like daffodils and tulips in May. The main attraction, the lavender, begins blooming in late June. From summer through autumn, the scenery shifts beautifully. The greenhouse operations also become more active from mid-August. While the flowers look most vibrant under bright daylight, we recommend visiting in the early morning right after opening to avoid the largest crowds.
Farm Tomita offers experiences for the eyes, palate, and nose. At the cafe, you can indulge in exclusive menu items such as 'Lavender Soft Serve Ice Cream,' 'Lavender Honey Pudding,' and 'Lavender Ramune' soda. For a deeper connection with nature, the 'Perfume House' allows visitors to engage with the scents of various plants. Walking through the farm provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the seasonal fragrances of the flowers in the open air.
The Nakafurano area is blessed with many beautiful sightseeing spots. The entire Furano region offers stunning landscapes that change with the seasons. During peak seasons, the 'Lavender Field Station' may operate as a temporary stop on the JR line, making travel by rail a convenient option. The surrounding area is also filled with local cafes and shops where you can enjoy gourmet food made with fresh Hokkaido ingredients.
As the farm covers a large area, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Since some areas are exposed to the elements, bringing a hat and sun protection (like sunglasses or sunscreen) is helpful. Regarding payment, while many facilities accept credit cards and transportation IC cards, it is wise to carry some cash for smaller purchases. To protect the plants and the environment, please do not enter restricted areas or pick any flowers. While some staff members can provide basic English assistance and English signage is available, please be mindful of local rules and etiquette.
