Escahill Naruto is a scenic observation facility located within Naruto Park in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture. It features a unique see-through, glass-walled escalator that connects the mid-section of Mount Naruto to the summit observatory. This design allows visitors to feel completely immersed in the surrounding nature while ascending. From the summit observatory, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the iconic Naruto Bridge and the swirling waters of the Naruto Strait.

History & Background

Historically, this area was accessed via an outdoor lift. However, the lift was highly susceptible to weather conditions and presented accessibility challenges for small children and elderly visitors. To provide a more inclusive and reliable way to reach the summit, the escalator was installed with a focus on barrier-free accessibility. Opened in April 1989, Escahill Naruto was a landmark achievement at the time of its construction, boasting a vertical rise of 34 meters, making it one of the highest escalators in Japan.

The most striking feature of Escahill Naruto is the transparent structure of the escalator. The glass walls and ceiling allow for an unobstructed view of the landscape, creating a sense of floating through the forest. Once you reach the summit, the view of the Naruto Bridge and the vast Naruto Strait is truly magnificent. On clear days, the visibility extends to distant horizons. The design also incorporates seasonal flora along the sides of the escalator, ensuring a beautiful experience regardless of when you visit.

Escahill Naruto reveals a different face with every season. In spring, the area is adorned with cherry blossoms, azaleas, and narcissus, offering a colorful journey as you ride up the mountain. Summer is also a popular time due to the nearby Awa Odori festival. Please note the operating hours: during the summer, it typically runs from 08:00 to 17:00, while in the winter, it runs from 09:00 to 17:00. Be sure to check ahead as there may be temporary closures for maintenance during the winter season.

Experiences & Activities

The ascent itself is a major attraction. Moving through a glass-enclosed space while rising through the elevation provides a sensation quite different from standard stairs or a lift. After reaching the summit, visitors can relax at the local shop to enjoy light snacks or local specialties, such as the famous Kintoki-imo (sweet potato) soft-serve ice cream, while soaking in the view.

Surrounding Area

Located within Naruto Park, the facility is well-supported by local tourism infrastructure. For those traveling by car, it is approximately a 5-minute drive from the Naruto Kita IC, or about 15 minutes from JR Naruto Station. Parking is available at the Naruto Park paid parking lots. The area is also home to various facilities for viewing the famous Naruto whirlpools and other scenic viewpoints.
