The Eriyama Rice Terraces are a series of terraced paddy fields located at an altitude of approximately 250 meters on the slopes of the Tenzan mountain range in Ogi City, Saga Prefecture. Comprising about 600 individual terraces, this site preserves the traditional rural landscape of Japan. The area is highly acclaimed, having been selected as one of the '100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan' and '100 Best Rural Landscapes in Japan' by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Furthermore, it is recognized as a 'Saga Heritage to be Preserved for the 22nd Century,' symbolizing the profound harmony between Japan's rich natural environment and its agricultural heritage.
This region has a long history of rice cultivation. These terraced fields were not merely created for agriculture but were meticulously shaped to fit the terrain, becoming a vital part of the local cultural landscape. In 2022, the area was officially recognized as a 'Connecting Rice Terrace Heritage' by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, highlighting its importance as a cultural asset to be passed down to future generations. The traditional 'Satoyama' landscape is continuously maintained through the dedicated efforts of the local community.
The most spectacular sight occurs from mid-to-late September, featuring the blooming of the 'Higanbana' (Red Spider Lily). As the rice ears turn a brilliant golden color, the bright red flowers bloom along the narrow paths between the fields. The striking contrast between the blue sky, the golden rice, and the vivid red flowers creates a unique scenery that can only be experienced during this specific season. The geometric beauty formed by the terraced structures and the surrounding natural environment is another major draw for visitors.
The most dramatic changes in the landscape occur during the peak of the red spider lily season in September. Many photographers and tourists visit during the second half of the month. Depending on the season, the landscape offers different expressions: the fresh greenery of spring, the lush verdant scenery of summer, and the breathtaking golden and red contrast of autumn. For the best photography and walking experience, daytime with bright sunlight is recommended, as it brings out the most vivid colors of the sky and the flora.
Visitors primarily enjoy nature walks and landscape observation. In late September, the 'Eriyama Higanbana Festival' is often held, organized by local residents. Participating in or visiting during this festival allows a deeper connection to the local culture and the changing seasons. For photography enthusiasts, the interplay of natural light and the colors of the rice terraces and spider lilies provides an exceptional subject for professional-grade landscape photography.
The area around Eriyama is filled with rich natural beauty. Nearby, the 'Eriyama Observation Plaza' and 'Erizama Rural Park' serve as excellent base points where visitors can rest while enjoying the panoramic views of the rice terraces. These spots allow you to fully immerse yourself in the scenery that blends seamlessly with the surrounding mountains.
As the paths may be unpaved or involve uneven steps, please wear comfortable walking shoes. Note that wire mesh fences are installed in some areas to protect against wildlife; please respect these boundaries and stay on designated paths. While the landscape is free to view, please respect the local farmers' working environment. Since English-language signage is limited, we recommend checking maps or routes in advance.
