Enoshima Samuel Cocking Garden is a beautiful botanical garden located on the mid-slope of Enoshima Island in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The garden is home to the Enoshima Sea Candle, a prominent observation lighthouse that offers panoramic views of Sagami Bay and Mount Fuji. The landscape features a diverse collection of seasonal flowers, remnants of historic greenhouses, and lush tropical plant life. At night, the garden transforms into a magical space during the 'Jewel of Shonan' illumination events, where the entire area is brilliantly lit up.
The origins of this site date back to a garden founded by the British gentleman Samuel Cocking during the Meiji era. Having developed as a high-altitude garden, it maintains a rich history, preserving elements such as historical greenhouse structures alongside its modern botanical displays.
A central feature is the Enoshima Sea Candle, the observation lighthouse that provides a striking silhouette against the sky. Visitors can enjoy seasonal roses, tropical plants, and the unique atmosphere of the greenhouse ruins. During special event periods, the garden hosts spectacular light displays, including a 'Chandelier Gate' and light tunnels, offering a completely different visual experience than daytime. The garden also includes convenient facilities such as a cafe, gift shop, and gallery.
The scenery changes beautifully depending on the time of day and season. During the day, it is perfect for a peaceful stroll among seasonal flora while enjoying the clear views of Mt. Fuji. After 5:00 PM, the atmosphere shifts during illumination events. The best times to visit are during the blooming seasons for roses and tropical plants, or during the 'Jewel of Shonan' events to witness the breathtaking light architecture.
Visitors can immerse themselves in nature through plant observation and leisurely walks. Key activities include ascending the Enoshima Sea Candle for the view and relaxing at the on-site cafe or shop. During illumination events, the garden becomes a premier spot for photography, especially in the light-themed areas. For easier movement around the island, the Enoshima Escar (inclined lift) is also available.
Enoshima Island is home to several attractions near the garden. Within the garden complex, you will find the Sea Candle, the Escar, and various retail/dining facilities. Nearby, you can also explore the Enoshima Iwaya Caves and the Enoshima Aquarium, making it a perfect day-trip destination.
As the garden features some slopes and uneven paths, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Payments can be made via cash, credit cards, transportation IC cards (like Suica/Pasmo), and PayPay. While English signage is available in various areas, specific facility details may vary. For special illumination events, it is highly recommended to check schedules or ticket requirements in advance. The terrain includes some steps, so please be mindful of accessibility.
