Enhara Fushuryu is a breathtaking natural spring located in Enhara, Yamagata City, Gifu Prefecture. The most striking feature is the phenomenon of 'Fushuryu' (subterranean water), where water flows underground before emerging again through the rocks. The local geological structure consists of limestone, which naturally purifies the water as it travels approximately 2km underground, resulting in an exceptionally clear and transparent stream. Surrounded by lush green mountains, white rocks, and thick layers of emerald moss, the area exudes a mystical, hidden-oasis atmosphere.
The Enhara River, which flows through this area, is a vital part of the northern Yamagata region and serves as one of the headwaters for the Nagara River. Historically, the purity of the water in this region has been cherished by locals. In recent years, it has gained significant attention among photography enthusiasts and nature lovers for its ethereal landscapes. It is officially recognized as one of the 'Gifu Water and Greenery Environment Selections,' highlighting its importance in preserving the local natural ecosystem.
The ultimate highlight is the sight of the clear stream surging from between the rocks, beautifully framed by vibrant green moss. Specifically, during the summer months (July and August), certain weather conditions can create a spectacular sight: 'river mist' (river fog) and 'light rays' (sunbeams) filtering through the dense canopy. This mystical interplay of light and mist is incredibly photogenic, drawing many professional photographers. The water is so transparent that you can clearly see every pebble and grain of sand at the bottom, allowing you to feel the raw vitality of nature.
To experience the best of Enhara Fushuryu, visiting in the early morning during the summer (May to August) is highly recommended. Between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM, particularly in July and August, the temperature difference between the spring water and the air often creates a thick, beautiful mist, increasing your chances of witnessing the magical light rays. While the area offers a refreshing escape from the summer heat, please be aware that the water remains extremely cold even in midsummer; use caution if you intend to approach the water.
Visitors can enjoy the artistry of nature with all five senses. You can listen to the soothing sound of the flowing river while strolling through the crisp, clean air. Photography is the most popular activity here, capturing the ethereal light and mist. However, please note that the terrain near the riverbank can be unstable and slippery; always prioritize safety while observing the natural scenery.
