The Ehime Prefectural Art Museum opened in 1998 within the grounds of the Matsuyama Castle ruins, a designated National Historic Site in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. This museum is a 'participatory and creative' institution where visitors can engage deeply with art through three distinct processes: 'See' (appreciation), 'Create' (production), and 'Learn' (study). The history of the museum dates back to its predecessor, the Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art, which opened in 1970. It was reborn in its current form as the Ehime Prefectural Art Museum in November 1998. Historically, the institution has focused on collecting and preserving works by local artists. The core of its collection includes world-renowned artists such as Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne, alongside significant works by prominent modern Japanese artists like Tsutomu Yasuda and Hajime Nakamura. Furthermore, the extensive collection of local artists, such as Hisui Sugiura and Masamu Yanase, serves as a vital cultural asset for the region.
The museum showcases its vast collection of approximately 12,000 items through various themed exhibitions. Beyond appreciating great domestic and international works, the museum hosts special exhibitions focused on local artists and diverse art-related topics. It is most pleasant to visit during the peaceful daylight hours. The museum is generally open from 9:40 to 18:00 (last admission at 17:30).
