Echizen Ono Castle is a historic fortress located in Ono City, Fukui Prefecture. With a history dating back to the era of the famous warlord Oda Nobunaga, it has long been a symbol of the 'Ono' region. Its most striking feature is its breathtaking location; when weather conditions are perfect, the castle appears to float above a sea of clouds, earning it the poetic nickname 'The Castle in the Sky.' From the top of the mountain-top keep, visitors can enjoy a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and the peaceful castle town below.
The history of Ono Castle reaches back to the Sengoku (Warring States) period. It developed alongside the castle town, serving as a central hub for the region. While many structures once existed, a massive fire known as the 'Tarobe Fire' in 1775 destroyed much of the original castle, including the keep. The current keep is a reconstruction completed in 1968 through the donations of local residents. Although it is a modern reinforced concrete structure, it serves as a vital cultural center, housing rich exhibits and documents regarding the successive lords of the castle and the local history.
The fourth floor of the castle keep serves as an observation deck, offering an unobstructed view of the lush natural scenery. The floors from the 1st to the 3rd level feature detailed exhibits regarding the historical lords of the region, such as the Kanamori and Doi clans, and provide educational displays about the castle's evolution. Additionally, visitors can explore the original stone walls, moats, and historical remnants like the gates (such as the Komyoji gate) scattered throughout the area, providing a glimpse into the authentic structure of a traditional Japanese fortress.
The castle presents a different face depending on the season. The most magical experience is witnessing the 'sea of clouds' in the early morning air, which truly lives up to the 'Castle in the Sky' title. Please note the seasonal operating hours: from April to September, the castle is open until 17:00, and from October to November, it closes at 16:00. The changing seasons offer a beautiful backdrop for photography and contemplation.
Visitors can engage in a deep learning experience by studying the architectural exhibits or simply relaxing while gazing at the vast landscape from the observation deck. The surrounding area is also rich in historical sites, making it perfect for a cultural walking tour through the castle town to connect more deeply with Japanese history.
The area around the castle is dotted with other significant historical sites. Notable nearby spots include the 'Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins,' a site of a former Sengoku-era castle town, and 'Heisenji White Mountain Shrine,' famous for its beautiful moss and cedar forests. These sites offer a deeper understanding of the history of Ono City. The charming streets of the castle town are easily accessible by foot or bus.
As the castle involves climbing stairs to reach the keep and the summit, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for light physical activity.
