Echizen Daibutsu (Seidai-ji) is a temple of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect, located in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture. It was founded in 1987 by the entrepreneur Kiyoshi Tada. The most striking feature is the massive Vairocana Buddha, standing at a height of 17 meters. This Buddha is modeled after the seated statue at Longmen Temple in Luoyang, China, and its overwhelming scale leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. The vast grounds are characterized by a sense of tranquility, with a well-ordered layout of temple buildings and a stroll garden featuring stones and lanterns gathered from all over Japan.
The temple held its eye-opening ceremony on May 28, 1987, and began its journey as a tourist destination. In 2002, it was officially recognized as a religious corporation and currently belongs to the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen. The creation of this grand Buddha was driven by the vision of local entrepreneur Kiyoshi Tada. While the management and land ownership have undergone transitions over the years, the temple continues to serve its religious role while marking new chapters in history, including a recent increase in international visitors due to expanded global marketing efforts.
The temple grounds are dotted with architectural wonders. Most notable is the massive five-story pagoda, one of the largest of its kind made of reinforced concrete. The main hall, which houses the central deity, is modeled after the Great Buddha Hall of Todai-ji in Nara, with a scale comparable to the Nandaimon Gate of Todai-ji. Visitors can experience the beauty of traditional Japanese temple architecture by walking past the Chumon and Nanmon gates. Additionally, the stroll garden offers a harmonious landscape where nature and architecture meet, featuring diverse stones and lanterns collected from across the country.
Regardless of the season, a stroll through the expansive grounds allows you to enjoy the changing expressions of the garden. During the bright daylight hours, the massive scale of the Buddha and the pagoda is most clearly visible, providing a powerful sense of grandeur. The scenery of the garden shifts with the seasons, offering a different atmosphere and charm depending on when you visit.
Here, you can immerse yourself in Buddhist architecture within a peaceful environment. Looking up at the colossal Vairocana Buddha is a unique experience found nowhere else. Walking through the stroll garden to observe the various lanterns and stones is also a precious opportunity to touch the essence of Japanese garden culture. The area around the temple includes other famous spots, such as the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. During peak seasons, the temple's parking lot may be opened for museum visitors, and shuttle buses may operate between the sites. Planning a visit to both the temple and the museum is a great way to explore the history and natural wonders of Katsuyama.
