Eboshiyama Park is situated in the Akaya Onsen area of Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture. Perched on a hill overlooking the Okitama Basin, the park offers breathtaking views of nature's changing seasons. It is particularly famous as a premier cherry blossom destination known as 'Eboshiyama Senbonzakura,' where approximately 1,000 cherry trees bloom in spectacular fashion during spring. Selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, the park is characterized by the unique harmony between the natural landscape and the traditional hot spring town below.
The park serves as the southern starting point of the Okitama Sakura Corridor. The area has maintained its natural environment for generations, and the surrounding landscape includes historical sites such as the Eboshiyama Hachiman-gu Shrine. This location, overlooking the Akaya Onsen town, creates a picturesque scene where nature and local life coexist in perfect harmony.
The park features a diverse collection of approximately 25 varieties of cherry trees, including Yoshino cherry trees that are over 120 years old. During the spring season, these trees bloom simultaneously to create an overwhelming sea of pink. Visitors can also explore historical elements integrated into the scenery, such as the Eboshiyama Hachiman-gu Shrine, the large stone Torii gate, Koju Bridge, and the Eboshi Stone. From the elevated viewpoint, you can enjoy a sweeping vista of the Akaya Onsen town layout.
The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons. The peak season is spring (early to late April) during the Akaya Onsen Sakura Festival. While spring is the most famous time, the park also offers lush greenery in summer and vibrant autumn foliage, providing a different charm throughout the year. Viewing the cherry blossoms from the perspective of the town looking up toward the park is also a beautiful way to experience the unity of the blossoms and the hot spring district.
The park is an ideal space for leisurely strolls and enjoying the panoramic views. Visitors can relax while gazing at the cityscape of Akaya Onsen from the high vantage point. During spring events, the park becomes a central hub for enjoying the festive atmosphere connected to the surrounding hot spring area.
Directly below the park lies the historic Akaya Onsen town. The area is dotted with local shrines like Eboshiyama Hachiman-gu, historical monuments, and various hot spring facilities. Most travelers visit the park in conjunction with a stay at one of the nearby hot spring inns to fully experience the region's culture.
As the park contains many slopes and stairs, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since this is a public space, please be mindful of the environment and other visitors.
