Jokyo Gorge is a magnificent canyon spanning the borders of Wakayama, Nara, and Mie prefectures, characterized by deep valleys and dramatic cliffs. The area known as "Johacho" features water depths exceeding 20 meters, where a gentle river flows through a landscape of towering stone walls. This unique topography was shaped over many years as rocks hardened by volcanic heat were eroded by water. As a specially protected area within a National Park and a designated National Scenic Spot, it is a place where the sheer power of natural sculpting is on full display.
The geological history of this site is profoundly significant. The current deep valley was formed through the erosion of rock that had been hardened by magma. The name "Jokyo" implies a slow, calm river flow, while "Cho" refers to distance; the Johacho area covers approximately 900 meters of this unique terrain. Historically, this area has been recognized for its extraordinary natural formations and remains strictly managed as a protected zone within the National Park system to preserve its geological integrity.
The most striking view is looking up at the sheer cliffs from the surface of the water. Because the river is deep and the current is calm, the perspective from a boat offers a dynamic view of the massive geological structures. In spring, the landscape is beautifully adorned with cherry blossoms, providing a different facial expression to the canyon each season.
